I've been at this for 32 years... and I've seen and used just about every CD/DVD burner, ripper, repairer there is. Most new PCs/notebooks comes with either NERO or ROXIO software for CD and DVD burning... and those are fine (but usually somewhat feature reduced). With those versions of ROXIO and/or NERO that come with computers, you usually have to upgrade to a full version to get their maximum features and benefits.
Honestly, though, I think there's something better in the form of ASHAMPOO BURNING STUDIO version 9.
Ashampoo has been pretty good as a CD/DVD burner since back in version 6, but even then it wasn't really up to par with such as ROXIO or NERO.
However, commencing with version 9.x (the current version), Ashampoo Burning Studio has finally become SERIOUS CD/DVD burning software. It now leaves ROXIO and NERO in the dust, as far as I'm concerned.
Personally, I think all PC/notebook makers should dump the BLOATED Roxio and/or Nero products, and begin shipping their machines with Ashampoo Burning Studio. Obviously, the PC makers would not want to ship the full commercial version. However, there's a freeware version called "Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009" that's just unbelievably good, considering that it's a freebie.
"Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009" is so good (again, considering that it's a freebie) that it's almost good enough to completely substitute for the Roxio and/or Nero freebies that come with most PCs and notebooks today; and it verily blows the socks off of Nero's recently-announced/release
But it gets even better...
Late this past summer, Ashampoo released an even BETTER version of its "Burning Studio 2009" called "Burning Studio 2009 Advanced Edition;" which boasts the following features:
" Burn data to CD, DVD or Blu-ray discs and update previously burned discs by adding and removing files and folders.
" Back up your valuable data to one or more CD, DVD or Blu-ray discs. Single backups can span multiple discs. Restore your backups in a single easy operation.
" Rip music from CDs and burn music to audio CDs and MP3 or WMA discs on CD, DVD and Blu-ray in a variety of formats.
" Burn movies and photos to DVDs and data discs as video DVDs, Video CDs (VCD), Super Video CDs (SVCD) and data video discs. Video files are automatically converted to the necessary formats.
" Author, edit and assemble your movies, add transitions, titles, texts, images and background music and then burn them to DVDs.
" Copy CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs.
" You can both create and burn ISO, CUE/BIN and Ashampoos own special ASHDISC image formats.
" Quick and easy erase functions for reusing rewriteable discs.
" Burning experts can create modified copies of existing discs (read in data structure and make changes and additions) and burn discs of all kinds with full control of all main configuration options.
" Full-featured cover and label designer prints to labels or directly to printable discs. It comes with a selection of point-and-click themes for instant results and easy-to-use creative tools for designing your own layouts.
The "Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009 Advanced Edition" lacks only the following TWO (2) features which the full, commercial "Ashampoo Burning Studio 9.x" (which costs $49US) boasts:
1) Ability to create DVD slideshows with titles, transitions and background music from photos
2) LightScribe support.
That's it. Those are the only two things which the completely FREE "Burning Studio 2009 Advanced" does NOT have which the full commercial "Burning Studio 9.x" version DOES have. If you can do without those two features, the you can get what has now become probably the best, easiest-to-use, most powerful CD/DVD burning software on the planet...
...for FREE. Except for the two things listed above, there is no difference between the freeware "Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009 Advanced Edition" and that same company's $49 "Ashampoo Burning Studio 9.x"
To download "Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009 Advanced Edition," just click on the below link...
http://tinyurl.com/yecllk7
...then install it normally. During installation, tick the "Get full version key (recommended, remove shareware restrictions!)" option check box.
After installation is completed, a registration page will appear in your browser window, wherein you may request a free full version key without limitations for the "Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009 Advanced" program. If you've never registered an Ashampoo product before, then so doing will also be the beginnings of creating an account on the Ashampoo web site.
The email that Ashampoo sends you with the registration code might be in German: "Ihre Registrierung Ashampoo® Burning Studio 2009 Advanced (F_cbo_de) (Deutsch)." Even though it's in German, though, the registration code itself should be obvious in the email. Even if it isn't, or if you don't get the email, if you go login to your account on the Ashampoo web site, and click on the item that lets you see all the registration codes for the various Ashampoo products you have associated with your account, you'll see your "Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009 Advanced" registration code listed there. Just copy that registration code to the clipboard (Ctrl-C).
Then go ahead and launch "Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009 Advanced."
Select "Enter Key" on the startup splash dialog, and then paste (Ctrl-V) activation/registration key into the Registration text box.
Click on "Register" to activate the full version of "Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009 Advanced."
"Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009 Advanced" supports Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista, and should work in Windows 7, as well.
If you need LightScribe capability, then you'll need to get "Ashampoo Burning Studio 9.x" instead...
http://www2.ashampoo.com/w
...which will cost you $49US (except that I think, as of this writing, there's some kind of "60%-off" sale going on, so you can probabably get it for right around twenty bucks, most likely... which is pretty good.
If you download the trial version, then use it for the trial period, then allow the trial period to expire without purchasing it, you MIGHT get an email from Ashampoo offering "Ashampoo Burning Studio 9" for something like $9.95... I've seen that happen before, too. I wouldn't COUNT on that, of course, because it would be just my luck, after telling you that that's what would happen, that it didn't. But i'm just saying I've seen Ashampoo do that sort of thing sometimes.
ONE CAVEAT: Once you create an account on the Ashampoo web site, that company will send you promotional emails offering you its other products for various sale and non-sale prices almost every single day. It's unbelievable! If you're in the MARKET for its other products, then, fine, just let those emails come until the product you want is finally promoted for a special price, then buy it. Then, once that's overwith -- or if you're NOT in the market for any other of its products -- then you'll probably want to go into your Ashampoo account and turn off all marketing emails. Trust me, you'll want to do that.
But don't be fooled by Ashampoo's outrageously aggressive marketing. It is not a "spammer" or anything like that. It just hits its registrants with marketing almost daily; but registrants can opt out. And Ashampoo's products (despite the funny company name) really are good. I mean... well... obviously not ALL of its products are terrific... no software maker's are. But, honestly, you'd be well advised to look through the list of products and see if anything interests you.
Two Ashampoo freebies that are really nice are...
Ashampoo ClipFinder HD (freeware)
http://www.ashampoo.com/fr
Ashampoo Magical Uninstall (freeware)
http://www2.ashampoo.com/w
Hope that helps!
So, then... let's make sure that I understand...
You install Ashampoo Burning Studio 9 (ABS9) and launch it...
...then you burn a disc, no problem...
...then, without rebooting or anything like that, and with ABS9 still open from burning the first disc, you try to burn a second...
...and then Windows dies.
If that's correct, then here are the things it would be interesting to know...
1) Precisely HOW does Windows die or stop working? What, precisely are the symptoms? And to answer this question, you'd need to be painfully, unbelievably detailed... describing, for example, whether ABS9 merely starts "not responding" or if it locks-up in some way but the rest of Windows seems more or less okay; or if Windows itself seems to lock-up, and if so then does the cursor still move or does even it stop; and if the cursor still moves can anything be clicked-upon? Or by "Windows stops working," do you mean it dies and goes to blue screen? From the instant that the "Windows stops working" even begins, until it ends, what, PRECISELY are the symptoms... what do you observe? And what do you do, precisely, to remedy? And to be clear: You're saying that it's WINDOWS that stops working, and not Ashampoo Burning Studio 9, right?
2) What happens if, after burning the first disc, you completely close ABS9, then re-launch it, then try to burn the second disc?
3) If doing what's in item "2)" doesn't make the second disc work without killing Windows, then what happens if you burn the first disc, then completely close ABS9, then reboot Windows, then launch ABS9 and burn the second disc?
I'm not suggesting, for even two seconds, that anyone should have to do what's described in either item "1)" or items "2)" as a matter of course. I'm simply asking for diagnostic/troubleshooting

Ah... an app crash.
So, then, just to be clear: Windows itself is not crashing... right?
It's just the application (ABS9, in this case) that's crashing. Right?
From your error message information, ABS9 is crashing when it tries to load or access the file acdw.dll which is the Ashampoo optical device library file.
Of course, there are simple RAM-related reasons why this could be happening; as well as potential conflicts with programs sitting in RAM. But this error is now making me wonder about the CD/DVD drive you have in your system. In other words, I'm suspecting a hardware problem (specifically, a problem with your CD/DVD drive); and/or a problem with whatever special driver(s) and/or other software which said hardware (again, specifically, your CD/DVD drive) is running either at the system level, or as an app.
The other possibility is that it's only mildly related to anything I've just written, but the problem is exacerbated by the fact that you're running a 64-bit version of Vista.
Make sure that whatever version of ASB9 you downloaded and installed is, in fact, the 64-bit version. If, by chance, it wasn't, then you need to uninstall it...
...but you need to do it using something like the freeware REVO UNINSTALLER, using REVO's fourth-down-from-the-top, most thorough uninstallation method; and then you'll need, when it's presented to you by REVO, to choose "Select All" and then "Delete" to get rid of absolutely every registry item and file/folder which ABS9's own uninstaller may have left behind. And then, even more than that, you'll need to go into the "Program Files" folder and make sure that ABS9's folder (and all sub-folders) is completely gone.
Then you would reboot.
Then you would install the 64-bit version of ABS9 and see if the erro is still there.
If you really DID install the 64-bit version in the first place, then, obviously, you don't need to uninstall it using REVO...
...though, that said, if there's any chance that the acdw.dll file got somehow damaged, then maybe you would want to at least re-install ABS9 and see if that helps. Sadly, with these sorts of problems, though, re-installing usually doesn't help.
Assuming it's got nothing to do with any of the above, then that brings us to my aforementioned possibility of ABS9 conflicting, somehow, with your CD/DVD drive... or with some driver and/or software associated therewith. That's my gut feeling, in any case.
What can you tell us about those things on your system?
Hmm. If there's but one version of ABS9 which serves both 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows, then perhaps I'm remembering another version of Ashampoo Burning Studio which did come in two different (32-bit and 64-bit) flavors. If so, then shame on my faulty memory.
So, then, if you're using a version of ABS9 which works correctly on 64-bit Windows, yet you are getting this error which, by the error message you posted, specifically involves the Ashampoo optical device library file...
...then I am left to wonder what it is about the specific CD/DVD drive (and/or the drivers and/or software which it requires, if any) which may be tripping it up.
I'm not insisting that that's the problem. But I'm now wondering. So, begged, again, is the earlier-asked question: What can you tell us about the specific hardware... the CD/DVD drive and/or any of its drivers and/or software utilities which may be loaded onto your system?
Sometimes a CD/DVD device's drivers and/or software will make the device unavailable to any software other than that which the device's makers prefer/intend should be used with it. It's irresponsible on the part of the device maker to so write its drivers and/or software, but some, nevertheless, do it. History is rife with examples of hardware and software makers whose work reflects their self-centered belief that theirs is the only hardware or software on the system which matters... and so does not "play well" with other hardware and/or software. Perhaps you have something like that going on. I'm not saying you do, I'm just wondering if perhaps you do.
It's difficult, without more information, and/or without being there to see what's happening with one's own eyes, to really and truly diagnose a problem such as this. That task is exacerbated by differences in terminology between participants in an exchange like this, such as I think was going on when you were saying the Windows was crashing when, in fact, it appears that only ABS9 was crashing. And the task is even FURTHER exacerbated when there is a language barrier, as I believe, just judging from your writing of English -- good though it is -- is also a factor.
I don't know how more to help you with this problem. ABS9 is an amazing piece of software; and I pray that you will figure out how to make it work on your system. I think you will agree that it's pretty much all that anyone needs for general-purpose, all-round CD/DVD burning... and even ripping, as long as complex copy protection schemes are not at play. Of course, there are specialized pieces of software which do such things as ABS9's DVD authoring capability, or its CD jewel case insert creation capability. Specialized pieces of software dedicated to just one task are always, by their very nature, better at what they do than generalized pieces of software which take a "Swiss Army Knife" sort of approach to their tasks like ABS9 does. But ABS9 does at least one thing EXTRAORDINARILY well, and that's outshine the feature-limited versions of such as ROXIO and/or NERO which come with many big-name computers today. As earlier stated, I think the likes of HP and DELL and others would be well-served to abandon ROXIO and NERO, to put, instead, a copy of "Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009" on their machines. At least that's not "bloatware," and many users might actually keep and use it.
If there's anything else you can add, mb4ever, which can help me diagnose your situation, then don't hesitate. However, I think you might want to contact Ashampoo's technical support using this form...
http://tinyurl.com/yjulv7j
...I've contacted them about stuff before and they've been fairly responsive. Like any software vendor's tech support, it could be better... but it's at least reasonably functional and serviceable.
Hope that helps.

I really like Samsung drives. I've installed plenty on Vista machines with no issues. A handful of them have been 64-bit OS's and they've all been seamless. OS applies drivers automatically. You should be able to just hook it up and be done with it other than the software and additional firmware it comes with.
