The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. What are the best tools for monitoring switches and servers on a network?

We are looking for a network monitoring service (hardware / software / outside service) that will effectively monitor our switches and servers on our campus.

Ideally, we would like to receive the following types of communication when a problem arises:
 * Primary - E-mail
 * Primary - Text Message to Cell Phone
 * Secondary - Phone Call / Voice Mail Message

We would like to effectively monitor the following:
 * IP Addresses of switches and servers to ensure they are up
 * Drive Space on our Windows 2003 servers
 * CPU and Memory Usage on our Windows 2003 servers
 * Service or Port Monitoring on our Windows 2003 servers (e.g. WWW, IIS Service, FTP, etc.)

We have used IPCheck (www.paessler.com) for several years and are currently running an outdated version.  Since this is a German based company and support has been a bit difficult, we are looking for something like IP Check but with a better way to get in touch with support.  We are also evaluating "Tembria" (www.tembria.com).

Ideally, we are looking for a piece of software that has a clean interface and is easy to install and maintain, but ultimately works well.  We have even heard of network monitoring services (3rd party services) that work with a piece of software that is installed locally; when something goes down, you get a call from a person who has already evaluated the problem for you.

I know there are a ton of options out there, but I am looking for what has worked well for people.  Any ideas? -Thanks!
