The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Event Viewer to Syslog Server

Tags: Microsoft, Windows Servers, ALL Versions, Event Viewer
I have several servers I manage and unfortunately, fall under S.O.X. Auditing.

I don't like having to go into every server once a month and crab the log files from the Event Viewer and store them over in our evidence area.  My thought is to have the Event items sent directly to a SYSLOG server which has centralized storage and which we are using for our Firewall, routers, switches and various other devices.

I would think I could send all them to the syslog and then have them sorted and/or filtered by event type/id and only have to take a look at it once a month or so to make sure everything is alright and address any problems.

So, the question would be, does this make sense and / or how to I pass these events onto a SYSLOG server?

It makes sense to centralize auditing of sensitive servers .  The tool you want to use is EventComb (free download from Microsoft at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308471

EventComb is pretty fast since it is multi-threaded and can export to txt, csv or Access Database format.

i used to use a nice software application for this.  Somix LogAlot (http://www.plixer.com/products/logalot.php)  the applications collects all windows events and allows you to sort them based on several fields.

I re-opened the question, but didn't close it again, since I wasn't sure how you originally split the pts.  Do as you see fit.

Thanks,
-Jon

Maybe I didn't understand your question - the sourceforge page for NTsyslog states

>This program runs as a service under Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. It formats
>all System, Security, and Application events into a single line and sends them to a
>syslog(3) host.

Isn't that exactly what you wanted?

Cheers,
-Jon

Captain,

I didn't see that part on the page and I also didn't see how to set that up.  That IS exactly what I was looking for absolutely!..  I may have missed something on that part.  Let me go back and look into it again.  I liked the interface on that but finding how to send it to a syslog, I couldn't.  Thanks for letting me know it is suppose to do that.  I'll look back into it.

THANKS!!!

>I didn't see that part on the page

Not surprising - that text is actually on another page when you follow the link to NTsyslog (near the bottom).  In fact, here's the URL for NTsyslog (which ocntains the text I posted): http://sourceforge.net/projects/ntsyslog/

If it works, can we get a grade change ;-)?  I'm a PE, so I could do it for you...

Cheers,
-Jon

Captain,

Sure, I would say a grade change is in order.

The other individuals did provide valuable information so I don't want to discredit them, but yours was the most accurate.  It did send the log files directly to the syslog server where I could sort by event and or host name.

How do we change scores?
