The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

WSS 3.0 will not search my Web Application on prot 80

Asked by FFNetAdmins in MOSS-Sharepoint, Microsoft IIS Web Server, Windows 2003 Server

Tags: , , , ,

I'm having an issue with my searching where any content database I attach to SharePoint on my standard Web Application (port 80), it won't search. I get the Event 2424 stating that:

"The update cannot be started because the content sources cannot be accessed. Fix the errors and try the update again."

The server is Windows 2003 with SP1 and all the updates from Windows Update (.NET2 and 3). What's strange is the same account that is running the search service is running the application pool- a domain admin account. The only results that searching will display are results from Central Administration, for example the help documents and such.

If I create a new Web Application in Central Administration on a port like 25936, detach the content database from the Web App on port 80, reattach it on the other Web App and then issue a crawl command using the STSADM command, I can see search results within 10 minutes and the error 2424 goes away in the event log.

What could be blocking my searching from running on the Web Application on port 80? All firewalls are off and the account searching is dbo of the content database. It's almost as if something is detecting all this traffic or data requests and denying it access, almost as if its sensing a Denial of Service on port 80? That's just a guess though. I have 4 SharePoint farms on our network and we have this problem with everyone. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
