Retrieve list items from a custom list using WSS 3.0 web services

Hi,

On a Sharepoint site, I've a custom list that can contain documents, folders (which may further contain folders / documents), other files. I want to retrieve these list items using a C# program by using the default web services that WSS 3.0  provides. In some cases, versions of the list items also matter.
Any detailed info on this may be of great help.
