The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Excel and PowerPoint files can not be checked into SharePoint

Asked by J-Techie in MOSS-Sharepoint, Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet Software, Microsoft Powerpoint Presentation Software

We are having issues with Excel and PowerPoint  (2007) use with MOSS 2007.   All files can be checked out (mandatory check in / out is enforced) and viewed in their respective client applications.  The issue is with saving / checking documents, we receive "There is a problem with the web server, Try again later, or contact the server administrator" and cannot check in the document.  If you check it out for offline editing and later try to check it back in SharePoint cannot find the files (in addition, sometime it places the files in the root of the local folder, other times it recreates the folder structure from the document library).

Word (2007 - Check in yes) (2003 - Check in yes)
Excel (2007 - Check in yes) (2003 - Check in no)
PowerPoint (2007 - Check in no) (2003 Check in no)

As you can see there is varying levels of compatibility.  I can replicate the problem on other machines, though not all some work just fine with all file formats.  Machines are all configured the same, Win XP Pro SP2, Office 2007 SP1.  I've re-registered OWSSUPP.DLL, even uninstalling and reinstalling office, but the same problem persists.

There doesn't seem to be anything in the SharePoint or IIS logs showing a communications or authentication failure.  I'm beating my head on this one.

how do the Office Products communicate back to MOSS, I assumed they all used the same method?  RPC, SOAP?  Why would Word files work without issue while the others have varying problems and what is the best way to further troubleshoot this issue?  I need users with Office 2007 to be able to use both the new and old formats.  For that matter 2003 users should be able to download and use 2007 files via the compatibility pack.

Oh, When new files are uploaded, and the check in process is requested, that works fine, the issue is only with existing documents.Start Free Trial
