The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Hi

I am experiencing an issue with Web Folders that are supposedly accessing my Sharepoint system.  For users who want to access specific areas of our Sharepoint directly, we have a bunch of Web Folders that have been previously created, that we copy to their "Nethood" folder in their profile.  For the majority of users, this works fine and they are able to (for example) open up Word, type a letter, then File>Save As... and navigate to "My Network Places", select the relevant folder for the section of the Sharepoint system they want to save to, and save the file.

However, for some users (no apparent pattern) and for new users that I am now creating, this approach has ceased to work.  Even though existing users are still able to use these Web Folder shortcuts, a new user I created before the weekend is completely unable to.  When they try and access the folders, they get the error:

"Documents in this folder are not available.  The folder may have been moved or deleted, or network problems may be preventing a connection to the server."

If the user attempts to use the URL of the Web Folder directly (for example, http://dmsportal/sites/committees/LAF/./) it reports the same error.  If I remove the trailing /./, the user's Explorer becomes an IE window, and they are shown the Sharepoint HTTP front-end representation of the files in question.  If I attempt to create a Web Folder pointing to any of these:

http://dmsportal/sites/committees/LAF/./
http://dmsportal/sites/committees/LAF/
http://dmsportal/sites/committees/LAF
http://dmsportal/sites/committees/
http://dmsportal/sites/committees
http://dmsportal/sites/
http://dmsportal/sites
http://dmsportal/
http://dmsportal

I recieve exactly the same error, for every one.  The user can see http://dmsportal in their IE as the web front-end (redirects to http://dmsportal/default.aspx) and they are able to ping the name dmsportal, resolving it to the correct IP address.  Another thing to note is that if I log on the same machine(s) that the user is experiencing the problem with as either another Standard User or a Domain Admin, I do not get this problem - accessing the folders is fine.

This problem is worsened by the fact that even if the user uses the web front-end to access and open files for editing (which works) she can't save them (as it reports a similar error about not being able to view the relevant Web Folder, even though I'm pretty sure it must have opened it up via that method in the first place?!

One final note - in the past I have been able to "fix" this problem, when it's occured for existing users, by using the "AllOfIt" approach - ie, running Windows Updates, Office Updates, emtpying temp internet files and offline content and then rebooting the machine.  This doesn't always work, it just has before... sadly it's had no effect this time.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Benjamin.
