The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Netgear GS748T with 802 VLAN talking to 748T with PortBased VLANs - traffic getting mangled

Asked by RGNCMExpert in Network Design & Methodology, Networking Hardware Firewalls, Network Switches & Hubs

Tags: , ,

We have a Sonicwall 5500 firewall attached to a GS748T switch breaking 2 Firewall interfaces up into 4 VLAN segments.  each VLAN has its own segment (192.168.x.0/24 x=1,2,3,4).

We then put the output of the 4 VLAN segments into ANOTHER GS748T that has PORT BASED VLANs to get even more ports for each segment.

The PROBLEM:
SOME machines on the PORT BASED VLAN switch have trouble seeing the firewall gateway address, BUT when we move the cable directly to the 802 VLAN based switch directly attached to the firewall, all the problems go away.

Weirdness: if we run a ping -t to the firewall gateway, it will fail to get a response 95%+ of the time --- BUT as soon as a PC on another segment pings the PC that can't ping the firewall, it starts to work!  for a few cycles... then it stops responding again.  I can not seem to get it to fail on the switch closer to the firewall.

QUESTION: Is there some special QOS, VLAN or other setting necessary when attaching the output of a VLANd switch to a non-vland switch?

has anyone ever seen the odd behavior of a machine not being able to ping something till someone ELSE pings them?

Any help will be appreciated.
