The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Configuring RSTP on network

Asked by MiamiCo in Network Design & Methodology, Miscellaneous Networking, Network Switches & Hubs

Tags: ,

HI, all.
I need set up RSTP in our company network and need someone to look at our topology and check my "calculations".

First of all, description for attached picture:
R1, R2, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8 - Racks
SWTxx - switchs
"number above the lines" - link cost 4 for 1 Gbit/s, 19 for 100 Mbit/s
Red lines - loops in topology
Servers are connected to SWT1 (not displayed)

Hardware description:
SWT1-3 - HP 5308XL
SWT16,18 - HP 2800
SWT22,23,34 - HP 2650
others - HP 2424 and 2524

First off all, I need to know what is better for best line bandwidth in our network(at normal status).
Run all traffic (in Rack 4,Rack 5) through one switch (SWT7 for R4 and SWT13 for R5).
or is it better to run traffic through two switchs (SWT7, SWT34 for R4 and SWT13, SWT17 for R5).
I think I read somewhere that max. bandwith for these switches (HP 2524, 2650) is about 5 Gbit/s but cant find it anywhere.

And from this depends other configuration settings.

My opinion is to run traffic through two switches at each rack.

Rack2
SWT1 - main switch and root bridge in this topology with BID 10
SWT2 - backup switch with BID 11

Rack4
SWT7 - BID 19
SWT8 - BID 19
SWT9 - BID 20
SWT10 - BID 20
SWT11 - BID 19
SWT34 - BID 19

Now should traffic run so:
SWT9->SWT8->SWT7->SWT1 and SWT10->SWT11->SWT34->SWT2->SWT1
And the blocked line should be between SWT9 and SWT10

For Rack5 is conf. same:

SWT13 - BID 19
SWT14 - BID 19
SWT15 - BID 20
SWT16 - BID 20
SWT17 - BID 19

Traffic:
SWT15->SWT14->SWT13->SWT1 and SWT16->SWT17->SWT2->SWT1
And the blocked line should be between SWT15 and SWT16

If brakes the line between SWT1 and R4, R5.  Traffic(from R4 and R5) should "flow" through SWT34(R4) and SWT17(R5).

So what do you mean is the best solution?

Thanks for answers.
