The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Blocking facebook - except for me

Tags: facebook, router, blocking
Hi, I am trying to block facebook on my home network - but i want to leave a "back door" way to access the site for myself (or someone I tell how).  Here is my network setup (indentations mean they are a part of the un-indented network)

192.168.2.1 - Wired router connected to cable modem
192.168.1.1 - Wireless router - THIS HAS FACEBOOK BLOCKED IN THE ROUTER
192.168.1.xx - all the regular computers in our house (my computer included)
          192.168.2.15 - IIS Server Computer

Is there a way I can have my computer access the IIS Server Computer or the 192.168.2.1 wired router to get to facebook?  I tried a proxy on the IIS server computer, and that worked in concept, but facebook uses http refers, and doesnt let you login unless you are at facebook.com (which makes sense, but is a pain for me)

Could I do something in the internet settings on my computer and change the proxy server to bypass my 192.168.1.1 router???

Thank you!

Why not re enable it on the router, and block it on the clients using a HOSTS file?

12.20.2007 at 09:28AM PST, ID: 20508369
editing the hosts file works great to block it, but how do i get around it? I tried typing in the ip, but that didn't work (if you type in http://204.15.20.80, it gets changed to http://204.15.facebook.com/, for which i get a page not found error).

Thank you for you suggestion

can you move your computer to the 192.168.2.x network?

01.01.2008 at 09:22AM PST, ID: 20560756
I could but dont want to.  My laptop that I use connects through wifi, and the only router that is wifi is the 192.168.1.x network.  (and i cannot switch the order of those two routers).  Thank you.

Ok so here is what i did to solve this problem:

I blocked facebook.com completely for the entire 192.168.1.x router EXCEPT for my computer (i did that in my router configuration page).  Then on my computer, I used Norton 360 to completely block facebook.com (using the firewall feature).  Then I set up a new profile in Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile) that uses a proxy server.  This lets me get around the Norton 360 block on my computer.  So now when i load that facebook profile I am able to access facebook.

(and just for kicks, I 'password protected' access to the firefox profile by putting the shortcut to that firefox profile in a password protected zip.  I know it isn't all that secure, but I don't think anyone will figure out that the way to get to facebook is in the zip file in the first place :)

Thank you for you suggestions!
-Kyle
