The problem first started showing up in the past 2 or 3 days.
Problem:
1. Web sites cannot be accessed - IE cannot display the page or Firefox or Safari cannot find the server. This occurs for websites such as cnn.com, foxnews.com, google.com, yahoo.com, amazon.com, etc. Also fails when using the websites IP address
2. Failed attempts to connect to an internal website (sharepoint portal) with similar symptoms
3. Sometimes google search or MS search comes up with the website name. Sometime the name of the website is corrupted, for example:
www.www.cnn.com.com4. Sometimes the website comes up but with little formatting looking something like what you see on the cell phone (style sheets missing?) without images
5. Sometime the website comes up but is corrupted with text overlaying text as if the positioning on the page was wrong.
6. NOTE: email (via exchange) is working w/o problem
Network Configuration:
Cable Modem connected to &
NetGear ProSafe VPN Firewall FVS318 connected to &
NetGear ProSafe 24 Port 10/100 Switch connected to the following:
+ XP Laptop very sporadic, browsing problem remains after removed from network
+ XP Laptop sporadic, browsing problem remains after removed from network
+ Macbook Pro sporadic
+ MS Small Biz Server SP2, frequent browsing problem, Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager, SBS Firewall disabled (use Netgear FW)
+ On a domain (Active Directory)
++ Several XP SP 2 desktops
++ 1 Vista Ultimate Laptop tested on and off network
Additional Configuration Information:
+ Using DHCP on clients
+ Server has fixed IP address and is the DNS and DHCP server, gateway set to firewall IP address
+ Firewall gateway and DNS points to ISP
Troubleshooting Attempts:
1. Refresh sometimes works but may have to refresh multiple times
2. Flushing the DNS on the client sometimes works
3. Flushed the DNS on the server and did a register DNS
4. Tracert to the website results in host not found
5. Ran dcdiag /c /v multiple times. I did get a no ldap connectivity once which caused the test Basc to fail. All other times it passed all tests
6. Ran netdiag, all passes
7. Connected laptop directly to cable modem and have seen no problems. Contacted ISP that ran a test (albeit weak imo) with no problems
8. Replaced cable between server and switch
9. Checked for duplicate IP addresses and found none
10. Physically connected server to firewall instead of switch
What has changed:
1. Ran an update on the SBS server last Friday
