The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

VPN Hardware Question

Asked by brian2k1 in Network Management, Windows Networking, Networking Hardware

I'm trying to upgrade the network for my small company. Previously we just had a WRT54G router and a dell 8-port gigabit switch. It's worked well but I would like to restrict access to parts of the network to specific ip's and allow VPN's into the network from remote computers (laptop or home pc's). For instance I would like our wireless router WRT54G and the receptionist PC to have access to the internet but NOT inside the network that contains our Small Business Server (2003 R2) and workstations.

Server
- Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 or just Server 2003 Std (running IIS, DHCP, DNS, and probably active directory, this is our web development server) (gigabit)
- ReadyNAS+ File Server (gigabit connection)

Workstations
- (3) XP Pro (business owners, full access)
- (1) Vista Business (receptionist, internet only)

Remote
- (2) XP Pro Laptops
- (1) Vista Business Laptop
- (1) XP Pro Desktop

Current Network Hardware
- Comcast cable modem
- Linksys WRT54G
- Dell 2724 (web managed switch)

If I move the DHCP and DNS handling from the WRT54G to the dev server the WRT54G will just handle wireless connectivity.

I was told to consider the Netgear SSL312 VPN Concentrator to handle vpn connections. But after visiting Netgear.com I found a VPN Firewall FVS114.

Questions:
1) What other network hardware do I need to handle remote connections into the network?
2) Does the FVS114 handle firewall and VPN in the same box or do I need the SSL312 in addition to the FVS114?
