The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Best network monitoring software?

Tags: Any
I am looking for a piece of software to deploy for network monitorin at a client's site. Basically they are running out of bandwidth and they want to see what traffic over what protocols are going to what workstations. It should be able to break down in a "pleasing to the eye" fashion what type of traffic, where it came from, where it is going, etc. For a added degree of difficulty they are using VoIP over their regular internet connection (...I know...) and I would like the software to be able to graph that traffic as well, not just as a big block of "Other".

Any Suggestions??

Thank you.

depending on the kind of equipment you have you can use a netflow analyzer such as the one from http://www.flukenetworks.com otherwise ethereal is a great tool and often comes with some security distibutions of Linux but can be installed on Windows machines as well.

I have used WireShark in the past. It is a little to "granular" to offer any sort of data that I can show to the client. I was hoping to find something that was a little more "end-user friendly".

I use wireshark quite a lot and after getting your head round it, you really can produce some nice reports with it..

however i use Observer (from network data) for the main reports. but this is expensive. but is basicaly wireshark on steriods with a lot more added on. You can get things like top talkers with a single click of the mouse. create reports with graphs either manualy or have them sceduled.

however that Other traffic you talk about it a fact of life... the only way to sort it out is to use some thing like wire shark and do a capture. filter out the other traffic and look through it. and then add your own rules to see traffic that you know about with in the "other".. we use a patch link sever that by default is not seen by wire shark or observer. Adding in my own rule it now shows up as patch link traffic. Do this a few times and soon other traffic becomes very small and you can see what you want..

All networks are different. And most network monitor solutions will only see the major protocals and applications, you always start of with a fair bit of other data. but like i say you just need to spend a day or so shifting through it once and making up your own rules.

Observer full suite like i use costs about £15,000!! so its not cheap. but jsut goes to show no matter how much you pay you will need to set up any soft wear to suit your network..
