Quicktime Icon on my task bar -- How do I remove it???
I have a Windows 2000 Pro workstation and it now shows a Quicktime icon on my taskbar (on the left hand side). I don't remember installing quicktime and in fact if I try to uninstall quicktime it is not listed in my add/remove programs sections. How do I remove this icon from my startup. It also does not show under the startup menu when I click "start" "programs" "startup". Also, I am not sure how to access the startup menu items like I did when I was on Windows98 -- by typing "config" under the run command. Please help! Thanks!

PeteL,
Thanks for the response; however, the only options I have when I right mouse click are: QuickTime Website, Open Favorites, Open Recent and Exit. If I click "exit" it closes -- but it loads again when I restart.

Run MSCONFIG and remove it from the startup
Using the Windows System Configuration Utility (startup)
Windows 98, ME, and XP have MSCONFIG
*****************
Windows 2000 doesn’t have msconfig but you can use it, if you...
Download these two files
http://www.iwebsitedesign.net/technet/downloads/msconfig.chm
http://www.iwebsitedesign.net/technet/downloads/msconfig.exe
Save them in C:\winnt\system32 (If C:\ is your system drive)
************
If annoying programs are popping up every time you boot into windows XP or log in, you can disable them with the System Configuration Utility.
Press START > RUN > type MSCONFIG to launch
When the application starts you will need to click the startup tab.
This lists all the applications that will start when you boot up or log in, you can simply untick the ones you don’t want to start and reboot (if a problem occurs you can simply re-tick it)
Most programs launch from the following registry Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR E\Microsof t\Windows\ CurrentVer sion\Run
Once you are sure you no longer need the application you can launch REGEDIT and go and delete a programs value from this key (DON’T DELETE THE ENTIRE KEY!!!)
Any software that is listed as "Common Startup" is being launched from the startup folder (click START >PROGRAMS >STARTUP to view them. You can delete the Icons from here <by right clicking it and selecting delete> to stop it launching.) This only deletes the shortcut; it does not uninstall the application.

well you maybe able to check the c:\program files\quicktime folder for a uninstall.
If you would like to disable it from starting with windows theres a few ways to get it to quit loading.
1. Try running msconfig and goto the startup screen and uncheck the box next to quick time.
2. if its not listed in msconfig goto start run c:\windows\win.ini and check the run = and load= lines for any thing that contains quicktime.
3. Only do this if your are experianced at editing the registry. If you delete the wrong stuff you can cuase major problems that i wont be responsible for.
But run regedit
select the //HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Softw are/Micros oft/Window s/Current Version/run and look on the right for any thing that says quick time and delete it.
also check the run once , services folders
hope that helps!
If its on the right it means its starting with windows, if its on the left then its just a shortcut on your quick launch. If you right click it and goto delte as pete suggested, it will get rid of it from the quick launch menu

Thanks for all of your input. Here is what I have done:
I downloaded the two files so that I could run the "msconfig" -- however, when I uncheck the quicktime item on the startup tab the mode changed from "normal" to "selective" on the general tab. It appears that it does not allow me uncheck something in startup and also keep it on the "normal" bootup selection.
I then looked for a quicktime folder under "Program Files" and there is one there; however, it does not contain an Uninstall. It has only two items:
otplugin.ocx type: activexcontrol
qttask type: application
I then looked in the registry under:
//HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Softw are/Micros oft/Window s/Current Version/run
and there is a task on the right hand side that reads:
QuickTime Task "c:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe " -atboottime
I'm not sure now -- should I just delete the QuickTime folder under the program files or should I delete the QuickTime Task "c:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe " -atboottime entry in the registry -- or should I do both? Please advise.
Thanks!
