Question

How do I configure Netmeeting so that I can host meetings?

Asked by: Swamp_Thing

A couple of users at my work would like to host a meeting using Microsoft Netmeeting.  However, I'm not sure what IP address I should tell the user to give to their meeting attendees...  They know how to join a meeting, they simply just enter in the IP address that the meeting host sends them.

We are on a class C network, if that helps (192.168.1.X).

If you are the NetMeeting host, configure Net Meeting to accept calls, share programs etc. Open Net Meeting:
Select Calls > Host Meeting from the menu.
Determine and set parameters as necessary
Check the Sharing box in the Meeting Tools region. Select Tools > Sharing from the menu. Select the Program to share and click Share
Determine the IP Address. Select Tools > About Windows NetMeeting from the menu. IP Address is used if you plan to use IP Address rather than a directory server. It is a good practice to check the IP address for Net Meeting from the NetMeeting menu, rather than using the Windows command line prompt.
Notify the participants of the IP Address.

Thank you for the information regarding how to set up desktop sharing, etc.  However, when I go to Tools-> About Windows NetMeeting, the IP says "192.168.100.176".  The problem with that is, 192.168.100.176 is a private address and people outside of our network have no clue what that is.  That's what I was getting at... how doesn't someone from the outside know how to connect to my PC's NetMeeting session?

ah that really really complicates it, netweemting i s a lot better when used ust within yoru network

as you are going outside your private network you owul dneed to give them the public ip of the router then do some forwarding on teh router to your private its quite tricky and if your public ips are not static from youre isp then it becomes even more of a pooch screw the problem is your behind a router/firewall which you know but fixing it can be a nightmare you need to first find out if your public iup changes regularly with your isp

let me know if you want to proceed its a lot of work for something though and can constantly need reworking

To find out the public IP they will need to use go to a site like www.whatismyip.com .  That will show your public IP and that will be one they can use.

After that you will need to use the steps to try to have your router/firewall/etc forward the proper ports to you.  Otherwise it will block them.  The steps above should help but you could also look at info or guides for those devices.  Give us details if you want us to try to provide specifics.

Let us know how this helps or if you have a question.

The only way for people outside of the private network to do netmeeting is run it over a VPN.

there's no other secure way of doing it.

PaperTiger: "The only way for people outside of the private network to do netmeeting is run it over a VPN.  There's no other secure way of doing it."

Is this true?  I won't bother trying to config the firewall and all that (the users are "ok" with joining meetings instead of hosting them) if it's not secure...
