Question

Seeking Help Setting Up Yahoo Messenger Super Web Cam

Asked by: Guncrazy

I've recently had to take a job away from home, and I'm trying to set up a couple of web cams between cities so I can "visit" the wife and kids via broadband.

My problem is that Yahoo Messenger says that Super WebCam mode is not available when I try to use it.  It tells me that it requires a few things:

1) A broadband connection (got it).

2) A webcam (got it).

3) The ability to connect directly to a friend (i.e. no firewall).

It's this last point I'm not sure about.  Here's how I'm set up.

HARDWARE:  My ISP is BellSouth, and I connect to the internet via a Westell WireSpeed DSL modem.  My network card is a NetGear FA311.  The webcam is a Creative NX Ultra.

SOFTWARE:  My operating system is Windows 2000 SP4.  I am using the latest version of Yahoo Messenger (v6.0.0.1671).  I have Norton AntiVirus 2004 and Norton Internet Security Professional 2004.  However, I do not think that the Norton programs are part of the problem, since I still can't use Super mode with both of them disabled.

ATTEMPTED SOLUTIONS:  I have attempted to configure the DSL modem to allow both TCP and UDP traffic, both inbound and outbound, using port 5100, under the NAT Configuration settings.  That didn't work.  So, on the modem, I selected my computer for IP Passthrough, although I did not change any TCP/IP settings on the computer.  That didn't work, either.
I also tried configuring Norton Antivirus and Internet Security, but decided instead to just disable them.  I still can't get super mode to work.

So that's that.  I would really appreciate any help I can get in setting this up correctly.  If you need any more information, just let me know and I'll try to provide it.

Thanks,

Earl

I'm not familiar with your modem; if it has builtin firewall support, you might try to step around it as an experiment. Many routers allow a single machine to do so by using a "DMZ" (De-Militarized Zone), logically outside the firewall.

It would also probably help if UPnP (Universal Plug-and-Play) is enabled - this accomodates port forwarding through the firewall.

You may need to open ports on your router to allow incoming traffic while using Yahoo Messenger. You can only open these ports to 1 computer. If you want to run Yahoo Messenger from multiple computers at the same time, you will need to modify Yahoo on the other computers to use different ports than what is listed below, and then open those ports on the router.

Please contact Yahoo for more information.

Yahoo Messenger uses the following ports:
5000 (TCP - Chat)
5001 (TCP - Chat)
5055 (UDP - Phone)
5100 (TCP - Webcam)

I fyou a er using a router, unfortunately the Super Webcam mode will not work behind any router. Please visit Yahoo Help for webcam and Super Webcam information.

Tried turning off PPPoE on the Westell DSL modem, and using a Linksys router to handle PPPoE and DHCP duties.  Didn't work.  I give up.

If you're using a LinkSys router, you might find some help here:

Ah,

If you are using a Linksys Router, you need to tell the router to forward the ports to your computer.

Step 1:  Set up your computer to use a static IP address and do not use DHCP

Write down your DNS Server IP addresses you have on the connection right now
From a command prompt, type IPCONFIG /ALL
Write down the primary and secondary DNS Server IP's
Give your computer the IP address 192.168.1.10, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.1
Set the DNS servers to be the DNS servers you wrote down, above
Verify that your can get to the Internet using this config

Step 2: Set up the router to forward the ports that Yahoo uses to be forwarded to your computer
Open up the Linksys interface by opening your web browser to 192.168.1.1
log in - no username, default password is admin, unless you changed it
   Choose Applications and Gaming
For application name - type "Yahoo"
For starting port and ending port, put 5000 in both
   For protocol, choose "TCP"
For IP address - put "10" in the box.
   Check the "enable" box.

Repeat for ports:
5001 (TCP)
5055 (UDP)
5100 (TCP)

That should do it.

Let me know how you fare.
