Question

Problems setting up video conferencing with msn messenger. Other party sees and hears me fine, I can see other party, but his audio works breifly, then turns to garble, then stops.

Asked by: TW_Husker

Both PC's are running XP on a new Sony Vaios. I have a new logitech webcam, other computer has older Logitec Webcam.  Both systems running linksys wireless routers (firmware update) and are comcast broadband subscribers.  Both machines test out fine locally with tuning wizard.  Have tried many things. Help functions. Disable firewalls. Taking routers out (direct PC to cable modem), reset port range and port triggering (instructions found on experts exchange).  Hired a geek squad agent that reset routers address and checked settings with Comcast.

Here are the notes from the Geek Squad agent: "When doing a tracert from point to point we are getting timeouts. We upgraded MSN messenger, router firmware, and disabled all firewalls.  We even went without the router and reset cable modems as per comcast request.  This issue is unresolved but it seems to be a problem with comcast routing between these two systems."

How can I get this fixed?

hmm...I can understand ur situation..Spending lot of bucks n time to get it happen first n then wasting energy to find it out why its not working..
Anyway coming to the point i dont see that the problem is because of some routing or layer3/4. Mostly i suspect the upperlayers. May i know weather have you tried any other application which does the similar video conference ..say for example yahoo webcam...or may be you can find some freeware by searching google.
If you test with those you can eliminate the issue of network or routing stuff...One more thing to check..could u check the status of windows builtin firewall which is enabled by default with SP2. Could you try to turn it off n check...

have you tried to change the default MTU settings on the wirless routers at both sites? it seems you have an unstable video conference connection between the two sites, but your internet surfing is good, right? if so, MTU (for routers and XPs), multicast and NAT issues might be considered.

I am the agent that went to help this guy out.  This is one of the wierdest things I've ever seen...Let me answer a few questions you asked and some you may be thinking of..

Windows firewall is off and disabled
Internet connection is fine
Other apps i.e. yahoo do the same thing
Tried opening up the ports that MSN uses
MTU is set to auto

This is really strange...We can connect to msn messenger just fine...There is no lag and we can text chat between computers just fine...The other system sees our video and hears our audio PERFECTLY clear...When the other sytem is video only, it seems fine...As soon as he tries to talk, it's just a short blip of sound and then nothing...Then his video freezes and the audio connection will time out and then quit.  I originally thought it might be his friend's end so I had hime fire up sndrec32 and record a short clip and play it back...It was perfect...I even had him (for grins and giggles) plug  a regular mic into the mic port (the camera has one built in and is USB)  and we had the same results...We worked on this for a long time and I even came home and tried having a conference with the client from my machine and was unsuccessful...I logged into msn with both of my computers and was able to chat across them perfectly...So I'm starting to think there is something not right on the client's system...

What do you make of this ??  When we do a tracert from this client's machine to the friend's machine, it goes thru just fine...When he does a tracert on us, it goes 4-5 hops and then starts timing out...We had this result with the router in place and with it removed...Nothing made a difference...I even found something that said that it could be a LSP problem...I ran LSP fix and there was nothing out of place and even ran what they suggested (xcleaner) and let it look for and fix problems...No cheese...I haven't been stumped in a long time and this time I am....

Just wondering, with 2 laptops plugged into the same router, click start --> run --> and type in conf.  This will bring up windows Netmeeting, which you may need to enter some info into it the first time you open it.  Once both machines are ready to go, get the IP address of machine A and then from machine B use that IP to dial up the machine with the camera's plugged in.   Under the tools Menu once connected you chould have a video options available, and make sure both send and receieve are checked.  This can test if it is the laptop or the ISP connection.

This is a great idea Tim...Go to your upstairs computer and get the IP...START, RUN, type CMD and then click OK...Type IPCONFIG and hit ENTER...Should get the IP...It'll be 192.168.1.100 or 101

You will need someone on both machines...Then start CONF like he said and go to the office machine and when you run CONF you'll see a little phone, click that and enter the IP address and click CALL...Make sure there is a MIC on the upstairs machine so you can test the audio chat...If it's still having issues, then we know it's most likely your machine...

Finally, this worked.  Not sure which step fixed my problem, but we are video conferencing.  Good to know I was not the only person struggling with getting video cvonf working with MSN!
