I'm looking for input on the topic of messaging in the office. We are coming across the typical question of productivity and security in our software development and tech support office env when it comes to messaging. Although a great tool, blah blah it can be intrusive and counter-productive to departments like development, etc...
So, I'm trying to find out what others are doing out there when it comes to using IM in the office?
1. Are companies, small in nature with say 25-35 users, being convinced to invest in secure business class messaging software these days? There was a big push for that in the early days. If so which ones?
2. Are companies doing away with messaging and using other resources that offer this type of instant communication features between staff (internal and remote)? If so what?
3. Anyone have insight on how this is handled in a development env amongst employed developers(some remote)? Any suggestions on how to tackle messenger policies with employees but in particular also with developers, in still wanting them to use it but not allowing it to cause them so much interference? Old school was developers was to be left alone and allowed to concentrate on code; these days I'm not sure how developers are integrated with staff, etc... I came from an environment where developers were left alone in their think/code tanks, but this company I'm at now is smaller and it's more of a collective team and accessibility philosophy/approach.
Any other best practices on the topic in office settings today is what I'm interested in reading...
Thanks!
