Question

tcp/ip port already in use (8555) Port specified 1677

Asked by: tiacovone

There are 3 servers all Netware 6.0 all have sp5, one of which runs Groupwise 6.5sp4.

Not sure of the order of occurance. Thursday afternoon 8/25 I started to install zenworks 6.5 desktop management software. After I installed the middle tier server I needed to reboot and everything still seemed ok. My next item to do was to use the migration wizard 8.0 to move data from an old box to new hardware. As I was doing final checks,  healthy nds, purge deleted files, checking timesync etc, thats when I noticed my timesync was off between the 3 servers. I hadn't noticed until then that my post office agent was loaded. Everytime I reboot I get the port in use and it shuts itself down. I don't know what has caused this and I didn't go any further with the migration. If anyone can help me get the PO back I would very much appreciate it. I will gladly provide any other info needed. Thanks, Tom

It says the port in use is 8555 or is 8555 the error code for the "port in use" error message?  Port 1677 is a standard GroupWise agent port.  Do you have more than one POA?

What servers have what on them?  Call them server A thru D for kicks, with server D being the target server for the migration.

What is on server A, server B and server C, and which one is being migrated to server D?

Before I get into all details I want to mention that I got help from Novell for my groupwise issue, but my timesync is still a problem. I just had to get the groupwise running on Friday asap. If you can help with the timesync I still need to get that in order so I can proceed with my migration. So, that being said...

Server A : In addition to NW6.0sp5 there is backup exec java application server and administration console 9.1. This server is the media server. Thiere is Zenworks 6.5 imaging server, Zenworks, Zenworks wol service, Zenworks workstation import and workstation removal.

Server B : In addition to NW6.0sp5 all the same Zenworks utilities are running here that are in Server A, but with BackupExec, it is only the remote server utility. Also this is where Groupwise is running. One POA, one MTA and GWIA.

Server C: In addition to NW6.0sp5 there is just the same Zenworks utilities as the other two but this one had the middle tier server installed. Also Backupexec remote server utility is also running.

Server D: Just the basic NW6.0 with sp5 installed. Temporary server name and install in new temporary tree. Same volume setup as Server C which is the one I plam to migrate from.

Just to let you know what the conclusion was for groupwise, we added a delay in the autoexec file after the grpwise load. It was loading manually with no problem after bootup, but for some reason it would not load and stay up normally without this adjustment. If you still have any ideas for me to proceed with my timesync problem that would be great. If you also have any comments in regard to novell's solution to the groupwise issue I would also like to here them. Thank you for getting back so quickly on Friday, I did really appreciate your attention.

Just another note. I've run dsrepair on all three Server A B C
Server A has the master replica and shows server B and C out of sync.
Server B has a read/write replica and reports on all three servers
Server C does not show server A or B when I run the timesync utility in dsrepair.
Is this a problem?

Just providing info as I think of it also:

DS version on all servers is 10350.30

timesync as it  reports from Server A
(Primary) Server A  Time is in sync
(Secondary) Server B  Time is not in sync +7
(Secondary) Server C  Time is not in sync -2

Sounds like you may have a communications issue.  Let's look at your timesync setup first, though. What is your timesync configuration on each server?  Load Monitor, Server parameters, Time.

Look at the "TIMESYNC Configured Sources" entry and the "TIMESYNC Time Sources" entry.  The "Timesync Type" of the time server s/b "Single" and the others "Secondary."  The "single" server should have Configured Sources=ON and the Time Sources should be whatever external time source you're using, usually a public NTP server.  The "secondary" servers should also hanve Configured Sources=ON, but the Time Sources should specify only the IP address of the "single" server.  This avoids name resolution issues.

It's possible that if configured sources isn't on and pointing to your "single" server, your "missing" server might be getting its time from your pre-migration server.

You said Server A is "primary" - in a small (under 30 servers) network, you should use "single," not "primary."  If it's set up as a "primary" that could be part of the problem.  In a big network, "primary" servers talk to other "primary" servers and a "reference" server to get their time and keep it in sync at that level, and the "secondary" servers are configured in groups to get their time from specific "primary" servers.  If you don't have a "reference" server, your "primary" doesn't have anyone to get its time from.  So, I'm hoping you just said "primary" rather than it being configured as a "primary" time server type.  If it's set as "primary" you should be able to change it to "single" no problem.

Once you make any changes, you should either unload/reload TIMESYNC.NLM or use the Monitor "TIMESYNC RESET" and "TIMESYNC Restart Flag" actions to force the changes to take effect.

I have made the above changes and everything is great! All servers are in sync.
Server A was configured as primary (not single) and I have pointed the other two secondary servers to server A. (and is now A OK)
Thanks for spending your time on this issue.
Tom
