The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Novell Groupwise is an Email system similar to Microsoft Exchange except it is developed by Novell.

Usually you will have a Netware server with Groupwise Installed and you can use either Outlook from the PCs or the Novell Groupwise Client to connect to this server to access your comany's email.

Does this answer your question?

Actually, the "usually you will have a NetWare server" part is no longer true.  Besides Notes/Domino, GroupWise is the only platform-agnostic email/collaboration/messaging system.  Exchange only runs on Windows, but GroupWise server agents can run on NetWare/OES, Windows and Linux.  You don't have to have NetWare or OES to run GroupWise - it can be in an all-Windows environment if you really want to - or an all-Linux environment.

Starting with GroupWise 6 you could run GroupWise on a Windows NT server, but had to have NetWare in the mix. GroupWise 6.5 added the ability to run GroupWise on Windows without needing to have NetWare - just eDirectory. The current version, GroupWise 7 SP2, can run on NetWare/OES, Windows 2000/2003, or Linux, but still needs to have eDirectory.  Starting with the next planned release, GroupWise 8, you can even run it using "native Directory Service" integration - and I wouldn't be surprised if, in addition to eDirectory and Active Directory, you could also run it using plain-old OpenLDAP (that last is just a guess on my part...)  Yes, they're removing the requirement for eDirectory, and are making it "directory agnostic" in addition to being "platform agnostic."

For more information, go to "the horse's mouth" - http://www.novell.com/products/groupwise/

With the current GroupWise, GroupWise 7 SP2, even though you can run the server processes on Windows or on Linux (in addition to running it on NetWare/OES) you do need to install eDirectory to manage it. That's not really a drawback, because eDirectory is hands-down a billion times better than AD.  You don't need NetWare or OES.  In fact, you don't need Windows servers OR NetWare servers - when you buy GroupWise 7, it ships with eDirectory and SuSE Linux Enterprise Server - an all-inclusive package.

Also, unlike Exchange, there are more client platforms supported by GroupWise.  Exchange has Outlook for Windows and Entourage for Mac OSX, but does not have a Linux or *nix client.  GroupWise has clients for Windows, Mac and Linux.

It's not lacking in mobile support, either.  They're constantly improving it, but GroupWise Mobile Server is available now (at no extra license cost) to provide "push" messaging to smartphones and PDA's, and there's a Blackberry Enterprise Server for GroupWise, just like there is for Exchange, to support the RIM network and Blackberry devices.  No need to go to Exchange 2007 to have mobile device "push."

GroupWise is much cheaper to buy and cheaper to keep.  With GroupWise, *all* you buy is user licensing.  You need one license for each active user.  The server components are included, and scale to much higher capacity than Exchange, with much faster and more efficient message processing.  With Microsoft Exchange, if your needs exceed the limitations of Exchange Standard, you have to get Exchange Enterprise, at a premium price, in addition to the Exchange CAL and Windows server CAL (or "Core" CAL) you have to buy for each user/mailbox.  There is no "GroupWise Enterprise" higer-priced licensing, because GroupWise is Enterprise-class from square one, straight from the box.  It's easier to manage, and has less downtime, and is far less vulnerable to exploits.  In the past 4 years, GroupWise has had fewer "critical vulnerabilities" than Exchange had in the first 6 months of 2007 alone.

You can split up the server components to as many physical servers as you want, to design the most secure, scalable and accessible solution available today.

Thanks ShineOn, that was a mouthful :)

I was trying to respond to the question without over complicating the answer - as I'm not quite sure if the question he is asking is related to what Groupwise is or if he is asking regarding the application that is generating the error as shown in the screen attached.

True.    And, now that I look at the screen shots, I'm going to try to get the first one removed, as I'm sure the people whose medical information is displayed probably have not consented to having their medical information displayed.

manojkumarsipah,

Please do not post confidential information.  If you have specific error messages to post, use <alt+prnt scrn> to capture only the message box, or retype the message yourself.  I have taken the liberty of asking an Admin/Moderator to remove your screen shot containing medical information and patient names.

ShineOn,
PE/ZA, NetWare/Linux/etc.

Now that that's done, the error and remaining screen shot indicates to me that either the application's mailto function has a problem, or the computer's default mail provider in the MAPI configuration has not been set.

Either way, I think it would be appropriate for manojkumarsipah's own tech support staff to fix it, but a quick-fix would be to select "Novell GroupWise Message Store" in the "Novell Default Settings Properties" screen and click "Apply," then "OK."  You'll then probably experience either a GroupWise login dialog, or the GroupWise client will launch.

My guess is that, if the GroupWise client isn't open at the time this application's send-to function is called, it tries the default MAPI mail provider - and it might be that the dfault mail provider for this user profile on this computer hadn't been set for whatever reason.  Regardless, it would best be handled by Queensland Health's IT department, I'd think.  Perhaps something got missed, either in the configuration for this computer, or in the user training for this user.
