Browse All TopicsHello,
I need to test GroupWise 8. I see that there is a GroupWise 8 for Windows version out there. Does it require Netware or can I install GroupWise 8 on a Windows server without having to have a Netware server? I was told that you do not need Netware for GroupWise 8 if you don't want to, so I am confused as to the choices I have with Installing GroupWise 8 on a Windows server. My goal is to not have to install Netware but I want to make sure I install it on Windows as Novell and experts would suggest it to be installed. So, that is why I am posting here. Thank you in advance.

Installing eDirectory on Windows is straight-forward. Download the product from www.novell.com/downloads and extract the file. You will need a Novell login account to download and to request a free eDir license. That license may take some time to show up in email. Install the Novell client and reboot and then run the install of eDir from the NT directory under the extraction directory you created.
Once that is done, log into eDirectory on the box and install GroupWise. This installation process will extend the eDirectory schema and add objects and attributes to support GroupWise. It will also help you create a simple system with a domain, post office and an Internet Agent. You can add WebAccess and the Calendar Publishing after the initial install. You can also add the client afterwards too.
Good luck and thanks for the kind words.

You've been told/read correctly. You DO NOT need NetWare to run GroupWise. It runs perfectly on Windows 2003/2008 even XP from a backend agent perspective. The GroupWise 8 client will run on XP, Vista, and Windows 7. There is a linux version of the backend agents as well as a linux and Mac OS X.x client. There is a WebAccess client that works in IE 6,7,8; Firefox 2,3; Safari; and Opera and probably some other browsers.
And yes, it works great on NetWare too.
Requirements before install:
eDirectory installed somewhere (NetWare, Windows, OES2-Linux). eDirectory is required to manage and configure GroupWise, not use it. Once user accounts are added to the post office and the various other configuration things are done, eDirectory just sits there. eDirectory is FREE with GroupWise btw.
On the Windows box you want to install and configure the GroupWise agents you'll need the Novell Client 4.9.1sp1 or higher (sp5 is currently available.
Be sure to turn off Data Execution Protection (DEP) on the Windows 2003 server or your install programs won't work properly. That is found in the properties of My Computer | Advanced Tab | Virtual settings
That is about it. To test it with the Internet, you'll need an IP address that can get outbound (via NAT or routable). You'll need IIS installed to use WebAccess.
I've written books about GroupWise and spend a lot of time consulting on it. My fourth book on GW will be out in the next few months.
Hope that helps...
