Hi PsiCop, Thank you for responding.
Yes, fresh system. But recall that the admin is a newbie and could very well have goofed something up. I have been learning on the fly here and building my first GW system as I go. I am trying to evaluate this system (groupwise in general) and do not yet have Novell support. As soon as I can lick the performance problem and get mail flowing on my dummy domain we will evaluate it in terms of user functionality and, quite frankly, looks. I have seen some good press and am interested in how my customers will react to the product. I'm really hoping this will do what my customers need.
That aside, we have no data to speak of in the system and only have one domain and postoffice.
Is there a way to just re-initial the domain and post office databases?
I will probably rebuild the whole shooting match as there is one error I know that I made. The directories are not lower case and the install instructions clearly said on a Linux system that they must be. So I will rebuild just to correct that.
Do you think the wrongcase name thing would cause the performance problem?
I think GW8 still supports the Direct Connect mode, but I am choosing to use the TCP/IP mode. When we first installed this time we didn't set that up correctly either ending up with (I think) a direct connect (that didn't work). I believe we got that the TCP/IP settings in order now (Tues. Eve.) and have the MTA and POA talking happily to each other.
Is there some way you would have me check?
No TCPWrappers or IPTables on the box. I have checked that. The box is a bare OpenSuse install on a VMWare Virtual Machine. Nice thing is that I can "rebuild the bare system" simply by reverting to a snapshot.
Perhaps I'll rebuild it tomorrow when business is slow.
Thank you for responding, I really appreciate that.

Hmmm... that is... interesting. Fresh system?
Does GW v8 still support Direct Connect mode? Make sure everything is set to TCP/IP only (in terms of how the client is supposed to login). The log entries indicate you're connecting with Client/Server (C/S) mode, but older revs of GW had oddball errors crop up when both modes (C/S and DC) were enabled.
Go to support.novell.com and find the TID for the "Top-Down Rebuild" procedure for your version of GroupWise. You've got new setup, and I can't imagine how it might have happened, but maybe there is some database corruption.
If you're running TCPWrappers or IPTables on the Linux workstation, make sure its not interfering with the GW client.
