Browse All TopicsHello,
We are attempting to migrate from GroupWise 7 on Netware 6.5 to GW 8 on MS Server 2008 x64. Our intention was to down the agents and copy the DO and PO to the windows server, install gw agents, install gateways, and then reconfigure the gw objects in consoleone. The problem with this is that our PO is taking over 24 hours to copy, and we can not be down for this long. We are looking for a solution that will allow us to move users one at a time with no obvious interruption of service. We were thinking of using a PO on the windows server to move users from one PO to another but are unsure of how to configure this PO to work correctly with the existing services on the netware server. For example, we have actually done this and after moving the user to the new post office they receive "post office unavailable" through web access. Any insight on the best way to do this would be appreciated.
Thanks

Here is what you need to do.
While your PO is running and users are logged in, do your copy with either XXCOPY or RoboCopy or BeyondCompare...NOT the Windows copy (copy/paste). Personally, I prefer XXCOPY (xxcopy.com). You cannot be down, interrupting users for as long as you mentioned. I always do the first copy during the day and no one even knows its happening.
Once the initial copy is done, schedule downtime BUT BEFORE you shut down the agents, make the changes to objects (domain and PO objects via ConsoleOne) and allow the administrative updates to process THEN shutdown your agents.
Use the special timeframe (incremental changes) switch with XXCOPY or the other and copy ONLY the newer files (which will be your userxxx.db files from the PO\OFUSER directory; the msgxxx.db files from the PO\OFMSG directory and the new attachment files from the OFFILES directory structure.
Copy your domain directory into place, install your various agents using version 8 software making sure that you manually copy the .DC files from both the domain and po directories from the expanded download file for the version 8 software from Novell. Otherwise, you won't have the version 8 .dc files needed by the version 8 agents to update the wpdomain.db and the wphost.db (domain and post office databases) up to version 8.
Once you have the domain/MTA and the postoffice/POA up and running and can login with either a version 8 or 7 client, shut them both down and install the GWIA and the WebAccess using version 8.
I do this stuff all the time all over the U.S. and Canada and have had great success. Let me know if something isn't clear here.
Hope this helps you.
