when you say groupwise do you mean the client or the server?

The only supported version of GroupWise on Server 2008 is 8.0HP1 or later.  That goes for both the client and the agents (server components).  I've run the 8.0HP1 client on Server 2008 and on the RC of Windows 7 and both run great.  I've also run the 8.0 HP1 agents on Server 2008 and it worked fine too.  

I've not tried anything earlier.  Doesn't mean it won't work, such a config. just isn't supported.  Be sure to turn off DEP before you try to install either the client or the server agents.
