Today I have discovered the solution to a problem that began yesterday.

Some of our client computers running Office Outlook 2007 (connecting to Exchange 2007) started crashing, when performing a search on any folder.

The error would crash Outlook and ask the user if they wish to restart. The error is reporting the problem in EMSMDB32.DLL.

After reviewing the event logs I discovered that the error began occuring after Windows Update installed the NEW version of KB2412171 (This originally caused a problem when released in December of last year and the new version also has this bug).

Uninstalling update KB2412171 from the affected machines resolved the problems immediately.

Hopefully this information will assist some of you in your troubleshooting.

Wow wow wow BrainPicker :) thank you very much. I spent several hours yesterday on four of our clients that where affected with this problem.

However I think it is strange that it was only on 4/40 of our clients that where affected.

I also tried to recreate the affected clients mail profile but that only seems to work on 1 of the 4 affected clients.

Thank you :)

Opps. Computer always work great until people use them. The update reapplied itself so either disable updates, not good, or ignore the update. Otherwise they call you back saying its still broken.

I forgot to add that I went into WSUS to decline/remove the update!

Do MS know that there is a issue with KB2412171? I read somwhere that KB2412171 first was released last year, but due to issues MS released a new version of KB2412171 the 11th of Janurary that corrected the bugs. Unfortunately a new bug was introduced as we see :(

Man, THANK YOU so much.  This article saved me from many many hours of banging my head against my desk trying to find an answer I probably never would have found.  Not to mention the nagging from my users who made a point to tell me EVERYTIME it happened to them.  Great article.

I have to agree with everyone here, this is a GREAT POST and it helped me out on 1 desktop out of 10 that are all configured the same. Has anyone noticed any trends on if this is only occurring on Windows XP or has anyone seen this on Windows Vista or 7? Mine was on a Windows XP machine. Thank you for this post.

Seems to just be XP and of course only Office 2007. 2003 and 2010 are safe.

no because mine is a win 7 x64 with office 2007 that was doing it.

jhuntin is correct. To clarify it impacts machines on any OS running 2007. The 7 boxes we have are on 2010.

Hi!

This bug shows only if you have cached exchange mode disabled. If you enable cached mode, search works just fine.

How can we uninstall the patch ? I tried uninstalling from the control panel, but that does not work...

I experienced cached mode as working fine whilst caching but then still showing the bug once the cache was complete.

Uninstalling that patch from control panel and then rebooting did the trick, make sure that you have the patch unapproved/scheduled for removable in WSUS if you're using it.

Unisntall of the patch in control panel does not work with me - it simply wan't unisntall. Don't really know why.

What happens if I mark it as scheduled for removable in WSUS ? Does WSUS instruct the PC's to uninstall the patch ?

Regards,
B.

It will schedule the uninstall, depending on your group policy settings this may take some time before you see the patches removed.

Just another confirmation.  Removing the patch worked like a charm.

One of my users is running Windows XP with Office 2007 SP3, and is experiencing this problem.  However, I don't see KB2412171 in add/remove programs (even with updates displayed).  When I try to run the updated version of KB2412171 or KB2475891 hot fix I get the message, "Expected version of the product was not found."  Any other suggestions?

Update:  deleting the mso.dll file and letting Outlook automatically recreate it (as noted in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/outlook/thread/905219e7-dbff-462b-a804-420bd021af2c) solved the problem.
