The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

OL 98 can't load VirusScan .dll

Asked by Tournefort in Outlook Groupware Software

Tags: ,

Recently I installed MS Outlook 98, and when I launch it I get this error message:

"The add-in C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Mcafee Virusscan\Emalscan.dll could not be installed or loaded. Maybe not enough memory or system resources or a DLL file is missing."

I looked to the VirusScan website for tech support, but as usual it was completely useless. It suggests four possible fixes:

1. "Close outlook. Go to the Windows directory, find the file EXTEND.DAT, rename this file EXTEND.OLD. Restart Outlook. Outlook will rebuild EXTEND.DAT upon restart. "

I tried this but it had no effect.

2. "Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to add the Microsoft Office directory path into our path.

EXAMPLE: Path=%PATH%;C:\progra~1\micros~1\office;C:\progra~1\networ~1\mcafee~1

Important note: Verify the correct path to the Microsoft Office directory for each computer because it may vary.

Save the change to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and restart the computer."

I have no idea how to edit the autoexec.bat or any of the other things suggested.

3. "Verify that the following registry key contains the correct path to EMALSCAN.DLL. Click on Start|Run and then type regedit. Check in the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Extension\Exchange Scan folder for the correct path. "

I checked this, although I am not quite sure what I was looking for.

4. "Check the path statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT to verify that it is not longer than 128 characters. If it is, reinstall VirusScan to a non-default directory with a shorter path, or check for paths to other products that aren't needed. "

I have no idea how do this either. The makers of VirusScan have consistently provided the worst tech support of any product I have ever used. If you can suggest a simpler way to fix the problem or how to go about following the instructions above I would be grateful.Start Free Trial
