Question

How to allow multiple DUN configurations

Asked by: wvance

I have a sales force that needs to dial into a RAS server from, Home, Hotel etc. Outlook 97 remote config only allows one telephone number to be configured. I would like to allow them to use a number preceded by an 8, for example to gain an outside line from within a hotel, or no prefix for at home etc. I also want to ensure that the dial-up, retrieve/send, forced log off sequence is maintained. I don't need these folks tying up the lines on the RAS server. The RAS server is allowing access to MS Exchange server.

I know of no way to do this within Outlook. I'd also be surprised if you could set up DUNs for *every* possibility...I've seen hotels with 7, 8 or 9 as the # to get an outside line...

Might be easier to just educate 'em and teach them how to change the phone# for the DUN entry. Don't have to touch the Outlook config. to do it... It's what we've done here and everyone seems happy. Pretty easy to do too, even for the 'illiterate' :-)

If cc:Mobile had this feature, I'm sure that as a competing product MS must have a solution. I'll poke around for a few more days before I give up. Thanks for the answer, even if all it did so far was confirm my suspicions.

Ok this can be classified as an answer if you're using Windows NT on these remote computer... All you have to do is add the alternate addresses to the list and tell it to choose the appropriate and the user will never harass you again...  If this is on 9x I have no idea how to do this..

Pete...

I created various profiles to accomodate the various dial-in scenarios and it works okay. The only problem I had was with a user changing the views in any given profile and the view was carried over to all profiles. The user did not like it. But, this will be a user education issue.

Thanks for the tip...
