Question

Outlook forms question regarding the autojournaled property

Asked by: Dmaio

I am trying to find information about a property named Autojournaled.  Is there any such property related to Outlook forms?  And if there is--what is the significance.  Obviously, it has something to do with the automatic journalling of an item but, specifics would be helpful.

Thanks,
Dmaio

there is a lot of information in the outlook help file about journaling (don't look up autojournal - just journal).

what do you mean "Is there any such property related to Outlook forms?"

Journaling automatically records your activites (depending on how you set it up, it includes the opening of office programs), tracks an activity, creates shortcuts, helps find files.

Here is the official ms explanation:
"You can set up Journal to automatically record information from certain contacts or documents from any Microsoft Office program.
You can set options to automatically record items that you send, receive, or create for selected contacts. For example, you can have all e-mail messages automatically recorded in Journal for the contacts you specify.
You can also set options to automatically record Office documents you create from any Office program. For example, you can have all Microsoft Word documents or Microsoft Access databases you create automatically recorded in Journal.

You can record individual items and documents that already exist, in addition to items and documents that can't be recorded automatically, by manually adding them to Journal. For example, tasks and appointments cannot be recorded automatically (although meeting requests and responses and task requests and responses can be). If you want to record a task or appointment, add it manually. If a document or item already exists, add it manually. Any item or document that can be automatically recorded in Journal can be recorded manually in this way.

You can also record any activity, even if it isn't an Outlook item, by manually adding it to Journal. For example, you can manually record a conversation you had in the hallway or a letter you sent to a business associate that you want a record of."

Ok, so I guess I should have been more specific.  I know how to use the journal and all of its functions.  My question is related to programing for Outlook.  Outlook uses controls, properties, events and methods in programming its forms.  I am trying to get information about a property called "autojournal" or something like that.  This is more of a programming questions than that of the functionality of the Journal in Outlook.

So, does anyone know of any such property?

Thanks!

There is no property, event or method in the Outlook 2000 object model called AutoJournal.  Can you give a little more explanation as to how you heard of this or what you think it might do?

i think he/she wants to manipulate the journal through code - which, according to ms, is possible. Here's what I've found so far, OL97, but you may be able to use it:

There is a tool called AutoJournal that is a VBA add in that works with AutoCad.  It can be found at http://www.autojournal.net/

There are other Journal add ins to be found at http://www.slipstick.com/addins/journal.htm

Per the Outlook 2000 VBA Programmers Reference, you cannot set options to log journal entries by code, only through the GUI.  However, once the journal entry is made you can manipulate it.

A Contact item has a boolean Journal property

Hope that helps

In response to PatriciaC's first comment...I heard about this from an outline I received while writing for a book on Outlook 10 (the soon to come out version)

part of the outline for the chapter on Journal mentioned the autojournal property and editing the registry to alter the journal.

I would be interested in learning any and all that is out there about these two topics.

Thanks!

Outlook 10 has a number of additional features that Outlook 2000 does not have.  I cannot detail any features of Outlook 10 (NDA), but perhaps it was a new feature.

I did see some info in the ms database about editing the registry for the journal so that it will track other programs.

you're an ms tech writer but they didn't give you the software to write a manual from???

by: DmaioPosted on 2001-02-07 at 11:25:44ID: 5822117

I have the software, outlook 10, but, it doesn't provide any information about registry editing for the journal.

Starl, info in the msdatabase?  Do you have an article number of a url?  I would certainly award the points to whomever could get me that info.  I will start checking but, until then...if anyone could help me find that, that would be great.

Thanks so much!

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Outlook\Journaling

I believe that you can add an additional key there to track other items.  There is an AutoJournaled key in there for entries such as Excel and Word.

so, *are* you a tech writer for ms?? I'm a tech writer myself, so I'm curious.

yes.  well...I am ghost writing for a new book about Outlook 2002 (might not be the real name) by Microsoft Press.   So, I am a contractor not employed by MS.  Make sense?
