If you can in fact see the old pst file(s), it may just be a case of clicking on File, Import and Export, "Import from another program or file", select Personal Folders from the list, and point to your pst file.

Browse All TopicsA storm trashed my Windows and like a dummy I renamed Windows and installed a new copy of it. Now when I open Outlook I can no longer see or access my folders from before with all my saved e-mails, not to mention what was in the inbox at the time of reinstalling windows. When I explore the outlook folder I can see the old folders but cannot open them. Is there any hope?

Depending on the outlook version you have, you can specify that you want to use the existing pst as email-receiver.
example in outlook 2000. File - open - Personal Folders File, select your pst. Once it is opened you can right click it and in the properties select the "Deliver pop mail to this personal folders file". That way your old pst is back up and running.

OK to tell you the truth I was able to import my messages that night after I posted this question. I had tried to do it before I posted the question but I don't think I was quite tired enough. For some reason I do better when I am tired. I have tried to duplicate the import again to see how I did it and cannot duplicate the process. I do know that I did not point to a pst file but to a dbx file.
So now, who gets the points? I am so happy to get my messages and address book back that I am doing the happy dance.

Hello rudybacon,
roblems/sc anpst.htm
look for the pst file on your disk then you can rename your pst to outlook_ORIGINAL.pst or something, open Outlook, let it create a new pst, and then see if you are able to open your original pst from File---Open---Personal Folders File or File---Open---Outlook Datafile
if that doesn't help check this troubleshooter
