The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Can't re-install MS Outlook 2000 differently under Windows 98SE

Asked by brnbrg in Outlook Groupware Software

Dear Friends:

I'm doing some complicated math work, so to make debugging easier I have 2 completely parallel PCs, both running the exact same version of Windows 98SE.  I needed MS Outlook 2000, so I installed MS Office 2000 on both machines.  I installed PC#2 first, selected NOT to give it a profile and to install Internet Mail Accounts later, it all went well.  I was tired, and when I installed PC#1, I accidentally selected a Profile which landed me in hell.  "Tools" in Outlook does not come up with "Accounts" as an option, even though I have removed the Profile under "Tools - Services".  The whole program, Oulook 2000 that is, looks and works differently than the precise same crap installed for my needs on PC#2.  I have uninstalled all of Office 2000 on PC#1 a dozen times, removed Outlook manually, even copied the relevant directory tree "Local Settings - Application Data - Microsoft - Forms/Outlook" over from PC#2 - all to no avail - whenever I newly install Office 2000, MS Outlook 2000 looks and functions differently by not giving me the "Accounts" option under "Tools".  Moreover, the Address Book looks and acts diffently:  Under "View" I now get only "Toolbar" as the only option, "Status Bar", "Folders & Groups", "Large Icon, Small Icon, List, Details", "Sort By" and "Refresh" are missing.  Accordingly, the data in the phonebook is not formatted, although it is imported fine into Outlook Express 5 as well as Outlook 2000 on PC#2 and even perfectly well into Outloosk Express 5 on PC#1, meaning that "E-Mail Address", "Business & Home Phone Number" have separate fields with gray-shaded headers on top.  It is stunning that in the entire Outlook 2000 Help, there is not a single reference to the word "Account" whereas the exact same installation on PC#2 DOES have "account" in its HELP INDEX, and a clear and well-familiar discussion of both, "Change e-mail configurations" and "Create a POP3 e-mail account", both missing after more than a dozen attempts to install and re-install, repair, remove, etc, on PC#1.

I suspect there is a hook into Windows 98SE that makes Outlook 2000 install this way no matter how often I remove it.  Note:  When I first installed the full version of Office 2000, it said it needed 420MB of disk space.  However, on all subsequent attempts, it says it needs only 330MB every time I re-install it after having made sure it is completely removed.  Hence, there is 90MB of cryptic crap flying around in my OS that I cannot decipher.

Help - is there anything I can do without re-installing everything and paying better attention when it comes to the point where it asks to create either a "Profile" or e-mail accounts later?  Is there any way to set MS Outlook 2000, or, for that matter, Windows 98SE, back so that the option "Accounts" appears again under "Tools"?

Thank you very much in advance.

Sincerely,
Bernard
