Question

Outlook / Exchange Refuses to Accept Credentials When Using Terminal Server

Asked by: deane_barker

I have a terminal server running in Remote Admin mode.

I have four users that connect to it regularly.

I have Outlook 2002 on the server connecting to the local Exchange 2000 instance.

Two of the users have no problems.  The other two users cannot connect to Exchange via Outlook.  When you try to set up the Exchange server in the profile, after entering the server and the name, if prompts you with a little three-field box wanting their username, password, and domain.

They enter the information and it errors with:

"You logon information is incorrect.  Check your username and domain and try your password again.  If you account is new or your administrator requested a password chage you new to click Change Password then login with your new password."

The password is correct.  I have tried resetting it, changing it, deleting the profile and recreating it, etc.  It simply will not take the user credentials for these two users.

Wierd thing is, the other two users are fine.  They were never even prompted with the little three-field box.

For the affected users, this only happens on the Terminal Server.  Their workstation copies of Outlook are running fine.

check the credentials of the users that can log on to the users that can't in active directory.  make sure you check both the securities tab and the Exchange Advanced\mailbox rights tab. enable advaced features in the AD MMC (View button).

That helped a lot --

The users that CAN login are both domain admins.  I removed one from the domain admin group and -- voila -- he can't get in.

So, the question is, why are only domain admins able to connect?

when you get that extra logon box it usually means you are authenticating with the domain properly. make sure your users have the apporpriate rights for terminal services and that the everyone group can access terminal services on that server.

"appropriate rights"

I assume they do.  They're part of the BackOffice Remote Operators group, and they are allowed to log onto TS.  They can, in fact, logon and do everything BUT connect to Exchange.

"the everyone group can access terminal services on that server."

Not sure what you mean here.

i'm not by a server right now, but if my memory is correct (most often its not), isn't there a security setting in the terminal servre configuration or terminal server manager? i did recall seeing this and having to add users in the past.  i'm not sure if it will do the trick, but i think that your issue is realted to permissions.  but where, i don't know for sure.

Well, this is one of those situations where I found a solution, but not the source of the problem.  As this stands, people who are domain admins can get into Outlook.  So a solution (as discovered here) would be to make everyone a domain admin, but, obviously, this isn't really an acceptable way of doing things.

I'd be happy to close this question for half points.  Based ont he responses, I did get somewhere....just not to a complete resolution.

Well, i had the same problem and i think i have the solution... i did work for me and when you read the story it's sound's logic.

The configuration always worked with other customers but the only difference is the following:

On the terminal server i installed Office 2002 instead of Office 2000 and there is the problem...
