According to this they say if you have outlook 97 and word 97 as editor then you will get this message
http://support.microsoft.c
But they should have resolved in 98 itself .. Try removing word as editor and check if you get the message
basically looks like memory problem

OL2000: Why Outlook May Continue to Run After Exit
http://support.microsoft.c
It seems to happen every time. Were using exchange 5.5. all you have to do is open outlook then immeaditley close it. You done even need to open an email for it to happen.
Were not running winfax, and ive uninstalled norton corperate.
Nothing seems to be helping.
It is described to the T in this article. http://support.microsoft.c
do you know of any way to obtain that hotfix?
Did you check this
The optimized and the full-file versions of this hotfix are a post-Office 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP-3) hotfix. To install the hotfix, you must have Office 2000 SP-3 installed
since you already have service pack 3 , you can install post office 2000 SP3. did you check going to
officeupdate.microsoft.com
I was just finishing up every office update possible when you posted this latest comment. You were right that there were 4 more updates to do after the sp3 update. I ran these, rebooted. However it didnt work. Im still getting the same thing. I did load up a newly created exchange mailbox, and that allowed me to close outlook. My emailbox and some of the larger ones seem to be the ones that are not closing correctly.
Thanks!
I had the same problem as Mohonk.
We run Exchange 5.5 and (normally) Outlook 2000.
After opening a mailbox with Outlook 2003 we had the problem as described in http://support.microsoft.c
I needed to keep using Outlook 2000 so I contacted Microsoft support on:
https://webresponse.one.mi
(You need a .net passport and the product ID for Outlook.)
It took about 10mins to fill in the support request and the next day they sent a link to download the patch (in a password protected zip file from an http site).
The patch fixed the problem.
Microsoft did not charge for the support incident.
I realize this is going to get old fast, but I have the same issue in my environment, and to even post the request, it asks for a credit card. Please I would appreciate it if you could forward this patch to me... My user did indeed install 2003 and then uninstall, now hangs on exit.
Thanks

Hey, I found this discussion just in time. I was about to go ballistic (and so was my client who is a lawyer and terminally pissed-off). Same story, XP Pro system with Office 2000. Outlook won’t close and the message box hangs on the screen indefinitely until I go through task manager. I've read that this may be a conflict with WinFax Pro?
Anyway, please send me the patch.
Thanks everybody...

Here's some info that may be of assistance...
When you use your Outlook 2003 version to open a client's
mailbox, two changes occur to the mailbox:
1) They now have a new folder called "Junk E-mail"
2) They have an extra field added to their Calendar that did
not exist in OL2000.
How this effects the client:
1) When the client now uses his own Outlook 2000 client
everything is ok until they try to log out. Their account
will not close. Task manager is necessary to kill the
Outlook.exe each time.
Solutions:
1) Delete the "Junk E-mail" system folder (just for looks)
2) Have the client log into their Outlook using the
".../CleanFreeBusy" switch. Then log out. They will need
to kill Outlook.exe in the task manager this last time. The
next time they log in all will be back to normal.

This link offers a patch for the "Hanging Outlook Office 2000" problem.
I just downloaded it but havn't installed it yet because I'm locked out of the office with the problem PC. I'll give it a shot Wed. morning and post the results here.
Here it is for anyone who is in need: http://www.adminnotes.com/
Good luck!

Hey mvesenjak,
The link is about 10 comments up, where I originally posted it. But, here it is again:
http://www.adminnotes.com/
I just went to the link, to down the patch for another client, so I know it's still there. I just sent the patch and the link to celtics3410 too, so be looking for it.
Sorry I bowed out so long.
See ya.
Does this patch require and/or install the Outlook Security Patch that prompts every time a program tries to access an Outlook property or method? We are having the "hanging" problem on one of our mailboxes but the PC we're having the problem on runs batch processes that use VB to send emails via Outlook. Because of this, we can't install the security patch on this PC until we have a chance to change our programs to use Outlook Redemption (http://www.dimastr.com/re
The comment from mylarchy posted 06/01/2004 05:19PM CDT worked like champ! The comment said to use the \CleanFreeBusy switch. Microsoft KB296192 provides information on how to use the command-line switches and provides a list of available switches. Even though it is working now I'm still hoping someone can answer my 6/24 post. We are in a situation where a shared mailbox is being accessed by people using both Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2003 so I'm afraid the problem may re-occur.
i've never seen an EE thread run for 4 months before...
question: i have other programs that gain access to exchange mailboxes and the SP3 update causes this annoying box to keep popping up. i can't remember exactly what it says because i've removed a few times from my computer, and i don't have it anymore.
do you think some of these other quick fixes like /cleanfreebusy and more of mylarchy's 6/01 post will do the trick without the patch?
Hi there,
I faced the exact problem after switching back to outlook 2000 from outlook 2003.
The Information here is great. I tried to download the patch from the link mentioned but it requires a login and password.
So I tried Comments from mylarchy's solution in this section dated: 06/01/2004 03:19PM PDT
This solved my problem.
Thanks a lot mylarchy for solving my problem.
Keep up the good work!
the SP3 makes it so when i use external programs for gaining access to my inbox, it says something along the lines of "another program is trying to access your inbox. would you like to allow this?...yes or no"...
it sucks, because we have an instant message program that continually looks for a new message running in the background.
The problem you're having is the reason I opted for the /cleanfreebusy solution. We have VB6 programs that access mailboxes so we don't want SP3 installed. I'm not sure if SP3 can be uninstalled. If it can, you may want to do so and try the /cleanfreebusy option to "fix" the mailbox. Another option, if you have access to the source code of the "instant message program", is to change it to use Outlook Redemption. Info for redemption can be found at http://www.dimastr.com/red
i'll have to look into that redemption thing...
actually i was hoping the "/cleanfreebusy" would be enough, but unfortunately i am still recieving the same problem on the same computer. it doesn't seem to happen to all computers in the office... just a few particular ones.
what singles these systems out from others is unknown to me...
Hello,
I am trying to access the URL posted above:

But am prompted for a username and password. Did I miss something somewhere?

Hey, I'm a network guy. I don't write code or design sites. I don't have the time, the inclination or the resources...
What I do have is a part time job e-mailing out this patch. Usually it takes up the first 45 min of my day sending out the "Outlook 2000 Hangs" patch that MS should have on the Office site anyway. I don't have any problem continuing to do so. (I've met some good folks doing it and everyone has been polite & gracious.) But...
If there is anyone out there that can set up a simple Website where folks could down this Outlook patch... I mean it. I have sent it to over 300 people so far. Some of the links I've been quoted aren't even from this site.
I want to help. I want to keep disseminating the information. And I will keep it up! But I would also like to come into the office without 30 new messages waiting, outside of what I get from clients. (They are trouble enough).
So if anyone can help me, and everyone who has Office 2000, out... please get a hold of me. You know the address.
The patch is here: http://djbumrush.com/outlo
Feel free to post a bogus question and then ask me to answer it so you can award me points :-D
You can also find the patch here:

This solution worked great !!!!
Cheers
