Question

Out of Office Assistant Not Working

Asked by: kgreene

Even when I have the Out of Office assistant on, it is not replying to any incoming messages.  I removed all rules I originally had, still not working.  Previously, I had rules configured and had upgraded to Office XP SP-3.  I don't know if it is a SP issue or not.  We have Exchange 2000 server and no other users are experiencing this problem.  FYI this is a W2K client PC.

Did you try going to Help, Detect and Repair?

by: kgreenePosted on 2004-06-18 at 11:44:38ID: 11347396

Thanks for the suggestion, but tried it and it did not work.  I don't think it can be a workstation issue because even when I configure Outlook on a new workstation for this Email account, the same problem exists.  It has to be some rule that did not properly delete from Exchange, but I have no idea how to clear it.

If this is a problem with Outlook only you could try recreating their profile.

A profile is resident to the PC.  I have tried creating a new profile and it does not resolve the issue.  As stated before, it must have something to do with the server-side rule still existing even though it doesn't show in Outlook.  Any MS Exchange 2000 experts out there know the answer?

Try this:

If you use the Out Of Office Assistant and turn on the out-of-office reply, the internal senders (on the local network) receive the automatic reply message, but external senders (on the Internet) may not receive the automatic reply.

CAUSE

By default, the out-of-office reply to Internet recipients is turned off. Many administrators do not allow out-of-office replies to be sent outside the Exchange Server organization, so that unauthorized people do not know when users are out of the office.

RESOLUTION
To turn on out-of-office replies to the Internet, follow these steps:
On the Exchange server, start Exchange System Manager.
Double-click Global Settings, and then click Internet Message Formats.
In the Details pane, right-click a domain name, and then click Properties. The default SMTP domain is "*".

In the Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab, and then click to select the Allow out of office responses check box. This turns on out-of-office responses to the Internet for the selected domain.

Stop the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine services, and then restart them.

This is a global setting that is already turned on.  other users are not experiencing this problem; so, that can't be it.  There must be something somewhere about resetting individual server-side rules in Exchange.  I'm digging around.  Let me know if you come up with anything.  Once again, thanks for helping out :)

After digging around on Microsoft's Technet Newsgroups, found my own solution at:

http://hellomate.typepad.com/exchange/2003/10/when_oof_doesnt.html

Apparently, my rule templates were corrupt (even though I didn't see any rules existing, they still existed in my information store).  Had to use an Exchange utility to delete the rules out of my information store.

It worked like a charm.  Hope it will help others in the future.
