Question

Unable to send of receive file attachements

Asked by: Pizentios

I work in an office with 22 users.  I have one problem with one person who uses Microsoft Outlook and one who uses Microsoft Outlook Express.  The person sending file attachements from Outlook to the person who uses Outlook Express sends fine but the person using Outlook Express can see the file attachement but can not open or save it.  The person using Outlook Express can receive files from everyone except this one person.  No rules are set to disallow file attachements from this one person.  I have even removed the person from the Outlook Address book and re-installed him thinking that would clear up the problem.  Only this one person's email is effected.  Any ideas?

what is the message when the outlook express user is trying to open the attachements?

Is it a specific file type that the receiver is having problems with or is it all file types.

Reasons I ask
- is it possible that the sender is on a later version of word, excel or whatever and the receiver can't open it because they are using an earlier version of the software ?
- is it possible the sender is sending an attachment for which the receiver does not have the appropriate software to process it with (eg. sending a zip file, when the receiver does not have winzip or any zip tool) ?

What type of attachment is the outlook guy sending ?

can the rest of the 20 users receive attachments fine from this Outlook guy. The answer could tell the problem is in the outlook guy..

You may want to check this in the Outlook express guy's machine though it doesnot affect as he is receiving attachment fine.

Open OE
go to tools --> options --> security
and uncheck " Donot allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus "

It's any type of attachment. And it's like the attchment was never attached. ~The only time that the user cannot receive an attachment is from this one user~

Answer:

no, they have the same version of office installed, and the receiver has all the nessasery software install to view these attachments. I still havin't gained any ground on figuring out this problem. Anyways, thanks for your replies so far.

See if the Outlook user is using "Rich Text" for the mail format.  If so, try having them change the mail format to "HTML" and then send an attachment.

What version of Microsoft Outlook is this?

There is no error message from the person who receives the emails.  The file attachements simply dont show up.  If he sends to more than one person, everyone else gets the emails so I know he is sending them properly.  It seems this one machine just does not receive any attachements from one that one user

The Outlook Express person has all the settings correct on his machine because he can receive any files from anyone else.  The only files sent back and forth are word documents and excel spreadsheets.

I meant check with the Microsoft Outlook user, not the Outlook Express user, to see if they are using Microsoft Rich Text for their mail format.  I know you said everyone else receives his emails fine, but didn't you also so that the Outlook Express user is the ONLY Outlook Express user?  If so, please check the mail format of the "sender" and if it's Rich Text, please try changing it to "HTML".  Let me know if that helps.  Thanks.
