Outlook 2003 - hangs (hourglass) when opening- or replying mail

When launching Outlook 2003 the first time after bootup it takes a while before all is in front of me.
However, when replying to an e-mail Outlook hangs and it takes upto a 2-3 minutes before the
e-mail is actually opened (cursor above the quoted text).
During this process I can easily continue to do some other things on my pc, i.e. all other processes are okay.

Win-XP, SP1 AMD2600 1GB

Does anybody out there have a solution?

Noticed that my 'complaint' is reported by other as well on Internet, however, no solution is provided.

TIA

The problem did not occurr anymore - so actually I did not apply the above.
Went thru the above and found it to be way-way too complicated for me (sorry...)
Regret I lack too much expertise.
Have split up the points to you both - as I could not think of a better solution.
thank you for your help!

I had the same problem about a week ago, managed to solve it by:
1. downloading & installing latest patches of WinXP and Office 2003 (not yet solved)
2. disabling script debugging (2 script debugging settings) in Internet Explorer under Tools/Options/Advanced (solved)

... it took me 3 days ... I'm not sure if what I did actually was the real solution, but after that it seemed to work (found the thing with the settings in IE somewhere on a website, don't know where anymore)
I had the same problem.  Followed Thomasphlips advice about the ie debug options (they were checked, I un checked, closed browser) tested outlook and it worked!  Afterwards I reopened IE and rechecked the debug boxes...Outlook still worked!!! Very odd...

The points awarded to the Accepted solution above are unexceptable and I think did not solve the problem. For Wulfrra, you need to search for the file "OUTCMD.DAT" in your local computer profile and delete it. For a standard Windows XP machine,  search in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\Username (Your user Profile) for the outcmd.dat" file.
You will need outlook closed in order to delete the file. The file "OUTCMD.DAT" will be recreated on restarting outlook.

Note: The file by default or when newly created is about 2Kb in size. It is considered corrupt and will slow or hang Outlook access if it is numerously huge in size.....

Had same issue. Executive user. Had large exchange mailbox. Also had psts attached in profile. Above solutions did not work for me.

My solution:
I ran scanpst against her archive pst files (both very large ~2Gb). Errors were found, and I restarted outlook and the problems are gone.
