How do I reset Outlook 2003 to its default settings?

OR...

maybe there's a better solution. When I send an email, the first one goes to the outbox and shows no sent date -- it will not go out at all. From then on, if I leave the first unsent email there after I double click on it and open and close it, the following emails go to the outbox with a date and display in italics, then they will go out, but only if I keep the first one in the outbox. It seems something is corrupt.

Hmm, I would not imagine that there are any default settings, apart from layout of toolbars and stuff.  All the important settings (such as your mail server, user IDs and passwords) are specified by you.

You need to check that all of the server addresses, user IDs etc are correct.  If they already are, then you could try a repair from the Help menu, or, if that does not work, a reinstall.

Mail client behaviour is a mixture of your Outlook software setup and the Mapi profile setup.

Step 1 - rename the registry key HKey_Current_User\software\microsoft\Office\Outlook and/or HKey_Current_User\software\microsoft\Office\%version%\Outlook.
Retest.
If still not working, rename the any subkeys under HKey_Current_User\software\microsoft\windows NT\current version\windows messaging subsystem\profiles.

This should get  you to a state where you can recreate your mail setup from scratch.

I agree with mrwad, and i recommend to unistall and reinstall the outlook as a step to solve the problem.

There's also Help| Detect and Repair.  By making sure both checkboxes are marked, all custom settings, inlcuding email accounts, will be removed.

HI All,
It doesn't happen too often but when a message is stuck in the Outbox it can be a real pain. When selecting the message and deleting it from the Outbox doesn't work the next thing you should try is putting Outlook into offline mode. To do this go to File-> Work Offline. Now restart Outlook and see if you can delete it. Don't forget to put Outlook back On-line again.

If this doesn't work;

Create a new pst-file; File-> New-> Outlook Data File...

Set this pst-file as your default delivery location in your Account settings; Tools-> E-mail Accounts-> button Next

When you now restart Outlook your original pst-file will show up as the secondary set of folders where should easily be able to remove the file from or even the complete Outbox folder

Set the original pst-file as the default delivery location again and restart Outlook; the Outbox folder will be recreated and will be empty.
