Question

YahooPOPS! not Downloading in Outlook 2000

Asked by: WizeOwl

YPOPS used to work fine.  Now I can't get it to download email from any of my yahoo accounts.  Advanced settings: Outgoing port is 25, incoming is 110.  Incoming server: 127.0.0.1.  Can anyone explain what is wrong or what to do about it?  Thanks.

Incoming server is the problem.  The IP address 127.0.0.1 is the "local host" which means your machine.

Normally an Anti-Virus software changes this setting and pretends it is the POP3 server, and Outlook asks the AV for the email, the AV downloads from the POP3 mailbox and scans the mail, and then hands it to Outlook.

Change the incoming server name to the correct pop3 server name and try sending/receiving.  If it works then you know your incoming email virus scan is the problem.

Thank you for your inputs. sajuks, I have turned off all firewalls except the one on my router which is hardware based and cannot be turned off.  I am using AVG anti-virus software (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/10/) which has been working fine with YahooPOPs for many months 'til now.  I would like to try your suggestion, traval, except my Yahoo accounts do not have a normal POP3 address, nor do I know another POP3 address to use other than 'localhost'.  Can you tell me what you had in mind by 'correct' POP3 server?

I have some new information to add to the puzzle.  When I reboot XP, I am able to run Outlook and download from the two Yahoo accounts using YahooPOPs.  I stop the download manually after 1 or 2 emails out of 10.  Then when I try to download from those accounts again, they do not connect.  If it was a firewall or spyware or virus problem, why would it run once on reboot and not again?

Which version of YahooPOPs are you using ?Is it the latest..
Would it be possible for you to try yahoopops with some other email client like outlook express or better thunderbird(www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/)
and see if ur still facing this problem.

The version of YahooPOPs is 0.7.3 which I upgraded a few days ago to try to fix this problem.
Last night, I received 5 of 45 emails from one of the yahoo accounts.  Then the progress bar stayed at 6.  It didn't freeze, it just wouldn't receive any more emails from the account. (Max downloads per session is 50, btw.)  What could cause this type of inconsistent behavior?

BTW:  I am using a 2Wire Router, Home Portal 1800.  I've added ports 110 and 25 to the allowed ports in the firewall options.  Is there another port I should open?  I've seen issues with 2Wire routers but I don't believe I'm having noise problems.  http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,12771943~start=0 .

I like Outlook and I'd like to continue using it.  It allows me to filter my email into separate folders.  I also use it as an archive for old emails.  I keep separate .pst files for different content.  These can be opened simultaneously as "Personal Folders".  I also get good support for Outlook from SBC, my DSL provider.  I'll try Outlook Express and/or Thunderbird just to see if the problem with YahooPOPs continues.

I ran the NVIDEA firewall application just to confirm the settings and it turns out there is another firewall application of which I was totally unaware.   It is called 'Active Armor' and is provided by the NVIDEA nForce 4 chipset on my Asus motherboard.  I turned it OFF and Outlook seems to be working fine now.
