OWA periodically prompting for a password

I have a remote user who connects to Outlook web access running on Exchange 2003 on a Windows 2003 server. I don't really have details of the user's PC, except to say that he is using IE 6 on a pc owned by a separate company on a separate domain in a different country. It runs Windows 2000, but that's all I know.

Periodically thoughout the day, when the user goes to perform a function such as sending a new email, they receive a box asking for their username and password. When they put these in, it then allows them to create their new email. i.e. OWA is working, but this password box is annoying. Any ideas why this is happening?

The only thing I could think to try was to reset the user's domain password, but that didn't help. I haven't had reports from anyone else that this is happening (although we don't have that many remote users).

Also ask the user to right click My Computer > Manage > Device Manager > network card properties and check if the setting to turn the device off to save power is selected. If it is, deselect it and ok/apply. Just a hunch.

Thanks BlueDevilFan - the link you provided was excellent. In addition, once I knew that "forms based authentication" was the issue, I was able to hone my google searching to get even more info (I'm new to Exchange admin and coming into a system setup by someone who has left, so the more help I can get the better).

Thanks also to upul007 - on this occasion I'm pretty sure the problem relates to that forms based authentication, but I shall certainly keep your solution in mind for future problems.
You're welcome.
