The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Outlook downloading old "read" emails again!!

Asked by sandeep_th in Outlook Groupware Software

Hi,
I opened my outlook like every other day today, and suddenly I was bombarded with a horrifying large number of emails(hundreds before I close outlook). On further scrutiny I found out that these were actually my old emails that I had already marked as "read" that were being downloaded( I keep a copy of the mails on our server)! On notifying our email service provider about the problem I got the following answer:

"the POP3 Server does not maintain any read marks. The Server can tell the
client how many mails are stored, delete mails and send selected mail to
the client.
So if you get all your mails to the client they have been requested by the
client. the server is not capable of sending without request.

So your problem is no Server fault. If there are any doubts look at
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1939.txt "

Now, I do want to believe the guy, but I am not so sure. For example if I access my email via a web interface, and if I have already read a particular mail in outlook, the same mail also show "read" in webmail(they use open webmail by the way). Which suggests there "is" indeed some read mark on the message. But I am no expert, so I can't say for sure.

Could anyone give any suitable explanation for this, something that can either explain this phenomenon, or give me something to confront them with.

By the way this had also happened to another user before(with the same provider), so I am a bit skeptical about accepting any "outlook quirk" theories.

thanks,
Sandeep
