Question

Speed up Outlook 2007 - Editor Options - Does it use Word 2007?

Asked by: Ryman1

I have installed Outlook 2007 and it is significantly slower than 2003 (even after tuning -AND- on my brand new IBM Z60T Laptop), but I really love how much better the Calendar works.

Is there a way to speed it up? Is it using Word to edit the emails - can I NOT use it?

Here's what I have done so far:

1) Trust Center - Removed / Turned off all Add-Ins
2) Removed RSS from Send/Receive

Still, it is so much slower than 2003. I welcome and embrace all tips to speed up Outlook 2007!

Hi Ryman1,

> Is it using Word to edit the emails - can I NOT use it?
I haven't begun using 2007 extensively yet, so I can't offer any thoughts on how to speed it up.  I can anwer the Word portion of the question though.  The answer is "yes" Outlook 2007 is now locked into using Word as the editor.  It's caused quite a stir, mostly because this change means that Outlook does not fully support HTML and CSS formatting any more.  I expect it also means that message in HTML format will also be fatter than before since the Word engine appears to add a significant amount of stuff mostly in the form of style information.

Cheers!

Greetings, Ryman1 !

1. Remove the RSS feeds from the default send/receive configuration. To do this, within outlook click Tools -> Options -> Mail Setup -> Send Receive.

2. Reduce the size of your PST file.

3. Remove the Windows XP Fax services (Figure D). You can do this through the Control Panel | Add or Remove Software | Add/Remove Windows Components.

War1,

I've done all of those, but it's still slow on a fast, new machine.

I certainly don't recommend migrating to Outlook 2007 at this point.

Ryman1,

I have heard many complains that Outlook 2007 is slow. Some users increased the speed in Outlook with the methods I posted above. Apparently it is not working for you.

Are you using Outlook 2007 with Word 2003.  This could be your issue. Outlook works better with the same version of Word.

I figured it out!

I tried it with Word 2007 and 2003 - both were slow. Both on a brand new install of XP Pro. So I decided to install Vista and WOW, it worked so much faster. I just talked to my neighbor who works for Microsoft who mentioned that although Office 2007 will work on XP Pro, it was really designed around Vista. Therefore, it will not run at optimal speed on XP Pro. If you have a blazing fast desktop,  you may not notice the difference, but on my 2ghz laptop it was really noticeable.

Not that I support this, but It's really a smart move on their part because it will encourage people to upgrade to Vista if they want to run Office 2007. I'm guessing they could have tuned it to work better on XP, but that would not promote upgrading.

Ryman1, glad you found something that worked for you.

Ryman,

I have been having my own problems with Outlook 2007 as well.  I wouldn't mind so much being "forced" to upgrade to Vista if Vista wasn't such a bug-infested steaming pile.

You may not be a gamer, but do you realize that almost half the best known games out there that are based upon Open/GL (a VERY common standard - Quake 4 for example ) simply WILL NOT WORK on Vista?  And yeah, they did it ON PURPOSE because M$ games don't run on Open/GL.

I just don't appreciate this "reverse-obsolescence" game that M$ is playing.
