Check the other folders for the missing emails, including Deleted Items folder. Check the view to make sure you are not seeing a filtered view. Go to View on the toolbar and select Arrange By > Current View. Make sure (all) Messages are selected for viewing.
If the emails have been accidently deleted, try to recover by running PST2GB. This utility is for recovering PST file too large, but has the side effect of un-deleting emails.

If the above process does not recover your emails, then they are gone. Import your backup PST file.
