Question

How do I transfer Outlook 2007 email accounts from 1 pc to another?

Asked by: afflik1923

Hi there,

I currenlty am running Oulook 2007 on my Windows XP pro laptop and have just purchased a new laptop top running Vista Ultimate.

Fro transferring over I can export rules, and transfer over PST files, but there does not seem to be an easy way to trasfer over all the accoutns (I have quite a few).

I know they removed this feature after OUtlook 2000 - but I thought there was easy work arounds. My Acronis True image home 10 claims to be able to do this but I Can't find a specific feature.

Any ideas on an easy way

Hello afflik1923,

Accounts are stored in registry. The following registry move has been tested for Outlook 2003. Should work for Outlook 2007 in Windows XP.

To move your accounts settings: Open your registry editor and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxx-xxxx\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Outlook

Export the entire Outlook key to a file. You've now backed up your email accounts. To restore the backup to another computer, simply import the backup into the new computer's registry. You may need to delete the Outlook key off the new computer first.

Hope this helps!

Note, the PC I am importing to is Vista running Outlook 2007. Do you think it will still work.

Why on earth did MS remove the ability to export? Was there some sensible reason for this?

No, I have never made it work migrating to Vista machine.

Is there any software apps that is worth me buying to do the job that are known to work with Vista.
I've heard of Outlook backup, but any recommendations from someone who has tried this to Vista is welcome.

Thanks

afflik1923, any update?

by: afflik1923Posted on 2007-11-04 at 08:03:56ID: 20211034

Unforuntely in the end I done a manual transfer setting up eac of the accounts one at a time.

The reason why I did not want to use the software is that I just wanted to trasnfer certianl elements - e.g. the accounts/ signatures, but not necessarily other parts.
I wanted my new laptop to be as clean as possible.
So in the end I had to revert to a manual account by account trasnfer.

I did not want to risk doing the registery editing as it wa said it had not been acheived on a Vista PC.
All input was appreciated.

AS for points etc.I'm not sure what to do. I would like to award points for the suggestions but I do not want it to be recorded that an exact result was found for my question as this was not really the case.
What are the suggestions in this case?

by: war1Posted on 2007-11-04 at 08:11:42ID: 20211070

You can award the points, but give a B grade. Readers will notice the grade and the reason for the grade.

This worked with one exception.  I had to manually replace the SID of the exported registry file to match the SID of the new PC.

Brett,
How did you replace the SID manually?
