"Convert your Outlook 2003/Office Outlook 2007 .pst file to Outlook 97-2002 format

There is no automatic procedure to convert an Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst) to the older format Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders file (.pst), which has smaller capacity and no Unicode support. The easiest way to do so is to create a data file in the older Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders file (.pst) format and then import items from the newer data file format to the older .pst file format."

i don't think so its possible, and if its possible then i am 100% sure, it will create a mess, as outlook 2007 comes with new featues and some internal format to manage pst, which outlook 2003 can no way understant it.

But you can try this workaround.

Creat a pst file on outlook 2003 and then open it in outlook 2007, and then drag drop all email items to the pst and then open the pst back in outlook 2003.

let me know if that works.

Hello timwilliams77,

Outlook 2007 and 2003 use the same format PST file, unicode.  You can copy the PST file to new computer, and use Outlook 2003 import wizard to import the data.

Or you can open the copied PST file in Outlook 2003 by going to File > Open, and navigate to the file location.

Hope this helps!

Hi War1

Thanks for your comment

However this does not work, when I try and open it I get the following

"the file backup.pst is not compatible with this version of the personal folders service.  Contact your administrator"

Tim,

To verify, you are move emails from Outlook 2007 to Outlook 2003?  Not over version?  Outlook 2007 is compatible with 2003 but not 2002 or earlier.

Are you trying to import the PST file?  Import does not work well in Outlook.

Try to open the file in a new Personal Folder. Then you can drag emails from one folder to another.

To make things simpler, I will summarise

An Outlook 2007 formatted PST file will NOT open in Outlook 2003, its a format that Outlook 2003 will not understand.

To get your data from an Outlook 2007 PST file, you need to create a 2003 PST file and move the contents of the 2007 PST file to the 2003 PST file, from within Outlook 2007.

Then you will be able to open the 2003 PST file within Outlook 2003

This is the only way to do it, as the Microsoft Office article I posted originally explains

PBAMark,

The article that you posted shows the difference between Outlook 2007 and 2002. Outlook 2003 uses the same format PST as Outlook 2007.

Outlook 2007 can use the same format as Outlook 2003 for PST files, however Outlook 2007 gives you the option of creating a 2007 version PST file, which supports a larger file size and other benefits than the 2003 PST files.  This 2007 version of the PST file is not compatible with Outlook 2003

PBAMark,

Outlook 2007 creates unicode PST file. Outlook 2003 creates unicode PST file. Outlook 2002 and before create ansi format.  The article that you posted shows the difference between Outlook 2007 and 2002.
