Cannot Open Random JPG Files in Outlook or other programs: Windows Update Issue maybe

Starting on Thursday last week we've been getting a lot of helpdesk calls about people not being able to open some JPG's on their computers.  All the computers on our network are Windows XP SP2 w/Office 2003 SP3.

The strange thing is that some JPG's open fine while others give an assortment of errors from the " no preview available" when you try to open them with picture viewer to "Action is only Valid for products currantly installed" when you try to open an attached image in outlook.

The file association is correct and some JPG's do open up.  It extremely random, for example I've got a couple of users with emails for 3months ago with JPG's they used to open up that now will not open.

I'm thinking it maybe have been a Microsoft Update or something cause it seems to be affecting random computers across the company.

I should also add that we run a WSUS server that installs only Critical/Security/Definition updates to our computers weekly.
Please help...this is urgent we get this fixed!

On one failing computer: Change the association of .jpg to Internet Explorer. Will the pictures open up? Change back to original association. Working now?

Hello spyder357,

If you installed Outlook 2003 SP3, that could be the problem.

Information about certain file types that are blocked after you install
Office 2003 Service Pack 3:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938810

Office SP3 and File formats
[includes downloadable REG files to unblock/reblock various file formats
(Word, Excel, PP, CorelDraw]

Hope this helps!

ASKER

Just an FYI but SP3 was installed a couple of months ago now.
We are also having this problem... the question I have for War1, what is the fix... it's not a word, excel, pp or Corel Draw file format.  Do we need to apply all of them?
Did you unblock JPG attachment?
CG_HD, you should add the extension of the attachment that you have problem with.   You should ask a new question, as answering two Askers can be confusing.
Just trying to get clarity out of the same problem's answer.  Sorry for the comment!
war1 how would you recommend I unblock jpg's?  Outlook is already able to open (some) them up.

The issue is that some jpg files work and some don't and there seems to be no common denominator (especially cause ones that previously worked say 3months ago are no longer able to be opened).

Very frustrated.

Yes, associated them with internet explorer and back again and get the same errors.
Does the JPG attachment being blocked have email format different from format of JPG attachment not being blocked?  Are they all JPG attachment?  Are some JPEG?
Ok, but could IE actually open the pictures? That's an important piece of information
Peakpeak in IE the jpegs wont open
Pretty old but ...

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS06-001.mspx

.. that would suggest to isolate one of the failing computers and do a full badware scan.
Are the JPGs from Mac users?
Here is an example of one of the files we're having problems with.  On one of the xp computers having problems with, first it could open it, then not, then it could, and now we get the standard "no preview" in Windows Picture and Fax view (and paint).

Also I forgot to mention earlier I can open these up on my vista machine.

There appears to be no difference in any of the files.

What about the scan please?
CG_HD, I think you may be right....I just tested out that theory and all of our failed JPG's have been generated by our art dept. while the working jpg's are from elsewhere.

All of the art dept's use OSX 10.4 or 10.5. Adobe CS3 and MS Entourage.
Try uninstalling Office SP3.
Do not uninstall anything: Update Mac computers
peakpeak I'm going to try that next although the mac tec usually does a pretty good job of keeping them up to date.

We tried an uninstall of sp3 just for testing but that did not resolve the issue.  Not to mention the fact that we would have to do this on hudnreds of computers AND its been working for months with sp3 in place.

Anyway I'm off to work on the mac's Ill let you know how that goes...

KB945432 may have changed your security settings.  In Outlook security settings, make sure you do not have anything blocking pictures.
Thanks for the replies....I'm going to test out removing this update to see if it fixes the issue.

Also we have found a way around this problem....if our artists save files using the "save for web" option in their Adobe programs....the JPG's work just fine.

Stay tuned...I'll test out removing that update to see if that also fixes this.
Removing that update fixed the problem....KB945932 is the issue.  once the update is removed our clients can also open the jpg's they had saved from way back when.

I've blocked this on the update server (WSUS) also......does anyone have a good way to remove these updates from 250+ computers?

I'll award points by the end of the day...thanks everyone for the help!

Thanks everyone for the help.  I assigned points to multiple people...rp you got the solution since you named the update that was causing the problem.  Peak peak thanks for your help, you had several great ideas and CG thanks much for the batch script.  Everythings working now

I should also add that our art department found that if they saved the images with the "save for web" option, the update did not need to be uninstalled.  What we ended up doing is uninstalling the update from most client computers as people called into the helpdesk and declining the update on the wsus server, at least for the time being.  THANKS EVERYONE!
I should add that I gave the solution a B since we found a fix that gets people working but not the root cause of the problem as to why the update is only affecting images not saved with the "save for web" option in adobe's products.
We're having the same issue as the OP with KB945432 breaking jpg files that were created by our graphics dept using Macs.  They're resistant to using "save for web", because it changes the dpi and color scale of the resulting image, so it doesn't give a true representation of what the "real" file looks like.

We can disable this update in our WSUS, but since it's already installed on many of our systems, we're trying to figure out if MS is aware of this issue and if they plan to issue a subsequent update to fix it?  99% of our users run with limited accounts, so I don't think adding the uninstall command to a logon script will help us.
That is exactly the problem I've had and why we uninstall (using remote assistance and the "run as" command) as our helpdesk gets the calls.  All of our users not in the IT/IS departments run with limited accounts.

I would certainly think other people besides the two of us are having the problem.
Yes, others are having the problem.  I think it has to do with sending from the Mac using the appledouble format.  If Mac users send using the Windows compatible only, the users that have KB945432 installed can view the jpgs.  Note: this is happening with other Adobe extensions PDF & EPS that are send using the default Appledouble.  I (and several others) have a support issue with Microsoft (created on 3/18), but so far there has been no response.  Might add, my Mac folks love the situation <sarcasm>.
PepsiCenter,

My mac users were crowing about this too until Apple's 2008-002 update broke 10.5.2's ability to print to Windows based print servers.  It been pretty quiet from that side of the building since :)

PepsiCenter: Can you give some more info regarding your AppleDouble theory?  I forwarded your comment to our Mac users, but they weren't familiar with it.  You say that if they send using the windows compatible format the files are openable on Windows, can you explain the procedure for doing this?
