The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Cannot Copy %filename% Network name no longer available

I'm having an issue copying files no matter how large or small over to oher workstations only on a specific subnet of our network. Everything else is working fine.

I brought in another machine from my office that works and put it on the bad network and I get the same network issues.

The error message after using \\ServerORWorkstation\c$ and copying a folder, I get:
"Cannot Copy %RandomFilename% Network name no longer available"

I'm pretty sure I ruled out any setting on the workstation due to the fact that my good omputer on a different subnet also stops working when transferred to that location as described above. We also experience hanging Outlook for email when accessing message sizes 1MB or more. The larger the file the longer the wait but it does get through f you wait long enough however, copy files always gives us these errors.

Also, I can copy files from my good workstation to the bad one just not vice versa

I hope this is a clue as to what the issue is.

I'm using a new Cisco 3720 switch and this all started happening around about the time of the upgrade but nobody is exactly sure. It's all fuzzy.

Pinging the gateway and the workstations from both sides shows 1ms but I don't think ICMP is an end all verification thatthe switch is not causing the issue..

Everything you mention points to a glictchy connection which most likely does point to a router/switch problem. Many problems don't show up with a simple ping due to the small packet size and timeframe, but only occur during a sustained connection (such as a file transfer etc.). The email comparison fits in as well, as email clients are better at handling a short connection loss. They just try reconnection until the timelimit is reached. Windows Explorer on the other hand, does tend to give up as soon as a network glitch occurs during a transfer.

For a ping test, you might try.....
ping hostname -l 65500 -t

This will send a larger packet and keep sending it. Watch it for a bit for any ocassional anomalies.

Awsome Kenneniah finally I'm getting someplace. I have made8 other posts leading up to this question which further makes me more confident that it's a NET issue of some sort. See my net ads won't touch the network because they did a ping and said its fine so this ticket has been in my queue for 5 days and I have tried everything.

By the way I tried making that argument about TCP/IP and ICMP with the Net Ads and on here.

I did the ping -l 65500 -t and I get a normal 12m with accasional time outs but thats expected so it'shard to say. I always figured IP/ICMP would try and correct slow or dropped packets and reasemble to complete the sequence as fast as possible giving you what looks like a good connection. I could be wrong but in any case I don't know :)

Anyays I may ask them to do a firmware upgrade, change GBIC cards and the patch cables. I may also look to see if the switch is overheating due to a broken fan or something. Who knows!

I will leave it open for a few more hours just incase someone has seen a similiar issue that involved the switch or related phsical cables.

Interesting, so their extent of troubleshooting is a ping and its fine? Pings are a great FIRST test, but only that. About the only problem a ping can verify for sure is a complete connection loss. They do almost nothing for testing for intermittent losses. Anyway, good luck!

But yes, we've had switches cause almost the exact same kinds of problems here. Best way to know for sure is utilizing a complete network segment monitoring and diagnostic solution with packet sniffers etc.

There are other options of course, such as a problem client computer on that subnet that is saturating the network ocassionally. Again a good newtork monitoring system should be able to pinpoit if that is the case also. With switches, it's rare to experience quite the same "broadcast storms" that happen with hubs, but similar types of problems do still happen. I've even seen faulty network cards cause the switches they are connected to reset once in awhile.

Cool I'll leave this open so I can update it tomorrow with the FIX. Hopefully  they can help me out first thing in the morning.

FIXED IT!

THe problem was a bad patch cable near the GBIC maybe where it connected. And only one side of the patch cable most likely the input side due to the fact that response times where slow on one end but fast on the other.
