The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Outlook 2003 custom rules

Tags: Microsoft, Outlook, 2003
I am looking for a way to set up a rule with a "not" command.

Specifically I want all emails that are sent to an email address forwarded to another one.  However I only want new emails not reply's or forwards.

I was hoping to add a rule for RE: and FW: not in the subject line but Im not sure if this is possible.
Is there a way to do this? Or better solution?

Hi, crownit.

Outlook rules do not have a "not" capability.  It is possible with a bit of scripting though.  Is that an option?

Scriptin would be an option for sure.

Anyone have any useful links that could help?

Something like the code below should take care of this.  Follow these instructions to use this.

1.  Start Outlook
2.  Click Tools->Macro->Visual Basic Editor
3.  If not already expanded, expand Microsoft Office Outlook Objects and click on ThisOutlookSession
4.  Copy the code below and paste it into the right-hand pane of the VB Editor window
5.  Edit the code making the changes per the comments I embeded in the code
6.  Click the diskette icon on the toolbar to save the changes
7.  Close the VB Editor
8.  Click Tools->Macro->Security
9.  Set the Security Level to Medium.
10.  Close Outlook
11.  Start Outlook
12.  Outlook will display a dialog-box warning that ThisOutlookSession contains macros and asking if you want to allow them to run.  Say yes.

Here's how this works.

1.  When Outlook launches the code begins watching the inbox for messages.
2.  When a message arrives, the ItemAdd event is triggered firing the code.
3.  The code examines the subject line of the message checking to see if the left two characters are FW or RE.  If they are, then nothing happens.  If they are, then go to step #4.
4.  The code forwards the message to the designated address.

Two things you should know about this process.

1.  This will forward every message that isn't a reply or forward.  If you only want it to forward certain messages, then the code has to have one or more conditional statements added to it.

2.  Send a message from code is going to trigger Outook's built in security.  The result will be a pop-up dialog-box warning that an application is attempting to send on your behalf and asking for your permission to allow it to continue.  That means clicking a button each time the code executes.  That kills this from being an automatic process.  Outlook security cannot be turned off, but there are two workarounds.  Both are third-party products that are not free.  One is called ClickYes (http://www.contextmagic.com/express-clickyes).  It's a small application that sits in the system tray watching for that security dialog-box.  When one appears it clicks Yes for you.  The other is Outlook Redemption (http://www.dimastr.com/redemption).  Redemption is a component that allows you to circumvent Outlook security in a safe way.
