During the Office XP install (the actuall installation phase, not the preinstall phase) , I get an error that reads something like. "Can not create the folder C:/Documents and Settings/{My Login Name}/desktop. Check that you have the permissions etc. etc." Except that {My Login Name} is really like LEW~ i.e it does not give me the entire user name because of the ~ !!! See below for why that matters.
AND THIS IS A TERMINAL ERROR AND PREVENTS OFFICE FROM INSTALLING WHICH, IF NOT SOLVED, MAKES THE PC 50% USELESS !! NOT FUNNY !
Well isn;t that interesting ??? The logged in user does NOT have the privelege to write to HIS OWN DESKTOP, REALLY ???? I am assuming that ther error message is wrong and what it wants to create is something (ex. the Outlook icon) on the desktop as the desktop folder already exists !!
One thing is unusual here. Windows was reinstalled into a new Windows folder (called Windows1) as the PC was not booting right. BUT EVERYTHING IS WORKING FINE and I do mean everything !!! PC now boots from Windows1 instead of Windows. However this caused the new user folder to be named Lew.Computer name and the old user folder is named Lew (just Lew).
It has occured to me that the Office XP install never contemplated this kind of Windows reinstall and is looking at Lew/desktop (in its error message above) instead of Lew.computer name/desktop which is the desktop for the logged in user. WHY THE NAMES ARE WHAT THEY ARE IS IRRELEVANT.
OK NOW ABOVE I POINTED OUT THAT THE ERROR MESSAGE HAS Lew~ so it could be saying it can not get at the logged in user's desktop OR the old user desktop before the reinstall because the letters Lew~
is not enough to identify which folder.
But is should not matter because I EXPLICITY (to copy all the files from the old user to the new) took ownership of the old user's data that includes his desktop. How I did this I do not want to go into; just trust that I did do it.
THE QUESTION IS HOW CAN I GET OUTLOOK XP TO INSTALL ON THIS PC.
Oh BTW Lew is really Lew Rubin and that is why the ~ occured in the error message, three characters is not enough to cause a ~ in a name.

Mike
