hi, i have a client having issues opening attachments sent to them from a specific user. whenever a particular person sends them MS Word or Excel files, upon trying to open the attachment Outlook asks what kind of encoding to use but nothing works and the attachments are garbled. These same files on different computers (XP running Outlook, Mac with Mac Mail) work fine. The attachments were sent from a Mac OS X machine, however I can send Word files to the client from my Mac laptop with no problems; so the issue only occurs when this particular user sends attachments to my client. Also, I can open docs fine on both my Mac laptop and XP machine. what gives?
no, but i'd hope the solution would be less drastic than this. i don't think client would want me spending that much time for this particular issue although it could work are there any other less invasive/more specific fixes?
Re-run the office install on the machine and make sure you install everything in the "converters and filters" section. Is the user using office 2007 by any chance? If so, other machines may need the office 2007 converter pack installed.
she's using Office 2003. I'll let her know that I would need to reinstall Office and recreate her profile...if it's a big enough issue then i'll let you know how it goes but we may just find a workaround for now since it's just happening for attachments from one particular person.
This appears to be a problem with Outlook. I've seen it reported all over the place, but no solution. I am getting the same (attchment shows in-line as garbled message). One posting elsewhere suggests that the garbled attachment (not limited to Excel) only happens when message is sent to "UNDISCLOSED RECIPIENTS". In my case that's true. Additionally, the subject line is blank. I have no problems with attachments of any kind from anyone else. Here's what message looks like (in both Outlook and webmail)

i dunno, the problem either went away or she just stopped complaining about it. i'm just closing this question so that it won't be open any more. thanks though.
