Question

Outloiok crashes on start-up.

Asked by: TygreII

I have a machine that has Office Basic on it and they recently have been having problems when they open their Outlook. It crashes on start-up while downloading mail from their verizon account.

I tried safe mode, but the same thing happened.

I got this Error event:
Faulting application outlook.exe, version 12.0.6316.5000, stamp 4833a470, faulting module outlfltr.dll, version 12.0.4326.0, stamp 44c81343, debug? 0, fault address 0x0004acff.

I tried replacing the outlfltr.dll with mine, but still nothing.

I don't get this error if I stop the download process.

May be a corrupt registry key or dll.  I would start with the easiest solution.  Make a backup of your pst file, uninstall and reinstall Outlook.  This should rewrite both.  Good luck!

Hello TygreII,

Before you reinstall Outlook, try this:

1. Reset the Outlook toolbar template. With Outlook close, do a search for and rename outcmd.dat file. Restart Outlook. Do the same for outlprnt file.

In Windows XP Outcmd.dat is located in C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook folder. In Windows Vista, file is located in C:\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook folder. It is a hidden file, so you have to unhide hidden files. Go to any folder and select Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Click OK.

2. Register an important Outlook files. If using Windows XP, go to Start > Run and type regsvr32 OLE32.DLL and hit OK.

If using Vista and you get an error, run regsvr32.exe from an elevated command prompt. To get an elevated command prompt, right-click on the "Command Prompt" shortcut and select "Run as Administrator".

3. If no joy, an addin could be corrupt. Disable Outlook Addins.  Go to Tools > Trust Center > Add-Ins disable the addins.

If Outlook does not open, go to Start > Run - and type outlook /safe

4. Check if an external program running in the background is interfering with Outlook. Check Firewall, antivirus and other security programs, Yahoo and Google toolbars, and desktop search programs. Disable these programs one at a time.

5. On the Help menu, click Office Diagnostics. > Continue > Start Diagnostics

6. Create a new Outlook profile.

7. If no joy, reinstall Outlook.  Go to Add/Remove Programs and highlight Microsoft Office. Click on Install/Uninstall.  A menu will pop allowing you to choose repair or reinstall.

Hope this helps!

Like I said, I just went for the easy solution.  If you have time to troubleshoot, war1's solution is the proper step-by-step problem resolution procedure.

Rickhobbs:
Thanks.  I think you might be right to just go for the throat on this one, but I don't know the password to get to them set back up. I got something that will do it, but I don't like pulling it out. People don't like it when you can pull out all the passwords that the computer has on it.  :)

Philby:
Thanks. I replaced the filter dll with the working one from my machine. That should have done it, but I think there is more wrong than the error code is telling us. I was able to stop the mail download process and turn off the filters and got the same results. Just so long as it doesn't try to get mail, it has no problems. Of course, then what's the point?

War1:
Thanks for the cut and paste...
#1 - #3 Did it. "No Joy" Even tried the safe mode, still the same thing.
#4 I kick off any 3rd party search program when I find it and disabled MS search too. Nothing that I can tell is running.
#5 Did it (Twice).
#6 Thanks for the link
#7 I think that this may be my only real option.

Thanks again, everyone! I'll look through this again in the Morning.

hi TygreII,

Try deleting C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\extend.dat

That should work and I didn't see in above posts that you tried that or that any suggested that.

by: TygreIIPosted on 2008-09-03 at 13:28:43ID: 22381607

This is what I did:
- I uninstalled and re-installed MS Office 2007. By the way, MS Office is not a clean uninstall. You need to clean up after it (Something I didn't know until today. I may end up doing a complete uninstall and cleaning later.)
- Everything came back the way it was, emails, problem and all.
- I deleted the outlook profile by going into: Control Panel \ Mail \ Profiles
- I created a new profile named the same. And configured the email stuff.
- The problem came back (at email #5 during the download.)
- I went online to the Verizon account and skimmed through the 215 emails they had waiting for them.
- Marked and deleted junk / spam mail. Moved anything older than a month to another folder. That brought us down to 76 real emails. (#5 was a spam or scam or something like that.)
- Now I have Outlook complaining every time it starts about: c:\Programs\Microsoft\Office 12\OMSMain.dll
- For the moment I have them not allowing the dll to load into Outlook.

I'm going to keep my eye on them. Things are at least running for them right now.

by: war1Posted on 2008-09-03 at 13:43:11ID: 22381744

OMSMain.dll relates to a hotfix that was incorporated in Outlook 2007 SP1. Make sure that is installed.

Thanks war1.

I'm just wondering if this issue has anything to do with the URI email vulnerability that Outlook has or had.

I think that I will make sure that they get all of their updates too as long as I'm at it.

I'm not sure if I'm done with this or that I just put a big band aid on it.

Thanks again everyone for your input. I'll keep this open till Monday in case my "fix" falls apart, or something.
