Mail format in Outlook does not work properly?

I have used Tools, Options, Mail Format to set up fonts etc for Send and Reply messages.. The colour and font type/size work fine, but I have defined italic and I always just get normal type..? I thus have to manually change to italic every time write a new email or reply to one, which is a pain.. Why doesn't it work properly..?
